I just recently returned to fishing from a long stay and one of the many changes I saw was flourocarbon. I've been trying it out and find it to be very brittle. I've come to find that if I don't re-tie real often, I'll break off on hook sets. I'm tying palomar and wetting the knot good. Are there any other tips yall can give on using flouro?

I use an improved cinch knot on all lines...just my choice...but when tying fluorocarbon, you have to wet it before tying because of the heat released by friction when pulling it tight...

*if you know this, ignore my comment*

I have never had good luck using a palomar on fluoro, mono yes fluoro not so much. Even the old fishermans knot is better on fluoro than the palomar. As stated earlier wet your line well prior to tightening the knot. good Luck and not all fluoro lines are created equal I prefer Seaguar Invzix, Red Lable ain't bad and is a little cheaper.

Honestly I went all in with flouro 5 or 6 years ago, was throwing everything but topwater on it. I now have it only on trig and question that. I hope you have better luck with it. It can be brittle, it does not cast as well, I have had more break offs with it than the rest combined. I think the advantages of it are overplayed. My big game does just fine. Wetting the knot is a must, palomar is a good knot, you will get a dozen other opinions on knot. Check the line often, it does not take any abrasions well at all. If you crig or trig with heavier weights keep a close eye on line right above weight., for me it seemed to scuff badly there especially around rocks.

Use XPS in nothing below 20# test. Fish for big Bass in heavy cover use 25#.

When you use the light line that retying is normal.

I know it;s gross but you have to keep the line from getting hot or kinked. I'm fishing the lower end of PK and Texoma and you have to use flouro to catch the bigger fish. I've lost a bunch of nice fish this year due to flouro breaks. Funny thing is I haven't experienced one since I switched from vanish to Invisx

I mainly use 15 and 20 pound inviz leader line, I tie a pallomar knot, never have I had a problem with the knot. Maybe the smaller test lines don't do well with the knot ?

I'd always use the improved Palomar over the plain Palomar, that involves taking the line thru the eye twice instead of once before starting the knot.

My problem with fluro is that it twists and kinks above the knot and generally looks like hell.

It want do that if you stick your finger throught the knot loop and tighten it up on you finger working it as close to the hook eye as possible, taking up the knot slack by pulling both ends at the same time.

Then pull your finger out and wet the line with slavia and tighten very slowly, pulling both ends at the same time, until the knot is in place on the hook eye.

Pull the tag end first to tighten then pull the main line to tighten some more. Cut off the tag and you are good to go.

Your knot will be as prety as the Bass you will catch.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like I'm not the only one with flourocarbon issues. I'll give the double palomar a try.

The brand could be a problem. I have had several break offs with vicious and broke off a fish that cost me a check at a bass open last year on vanish. Seagur invisix is where its at.

+1 on Invivix.. I use 8 and 10lb for drop shot and shakey head fishing and it is by far the best I have used. Had bad luck with several others.. all the above.. breakoffs on hook sets the biggest culprit.. that is very frustrating.

Before giving up on fluoro give the yo zuri hybrid line a try..sensitive but more more manageable than pure fluoro

Used floro for a while and lost way too many fish. The slightest nick in the line and it breaks under little stress. Tried all the tricks, knots and brands; same results.

I have been using copolymer line on my spinning reels and have moved to braid and mono leaders on my larger setups. I have no regrets leaving floro and miss it zero.

And have you seen the price of this stuff lately? But then again, you have people who shell out $500 for reels, $300 a pop for a rod, and $60K for a boat. Thirty bucks for line is like lunch money I suppose.

$34.99 to $38.99 for 110 yards of line. Really?

Read an article a while ago floro is produced by only a few extrusion plants in the world. That being said I still tried several brands. IMHO, it's almost all the same stuff other than the pretty stickers, package and the pro taking a cut for endorsing the brand.

Whatever works for you and gives you confidence, good on ya.
