Looking for some wade spots in Corpus Christi, and also for my first time fly fishing the salt #9083294 06/30/13 02:43 AM

Hi, I started fly fishing earlier this year and my family decided to go to Corpus for a few days at the end of july, so I bought a saltwater setup and I want to try and fly fish when we go on the trip. My main question is where I might be able to go in corpus to wade fish (I don't have a boat or the money to hire a guide), and also what patterns might work at the spot you recommend? I really don't care at all what I'm catching as long as I catch a fish, heck if there's a way to catch hardheads on a fly I'm fine with that... My other question is what leader setup would you use, just a plain tapered leader just in higher pound test, or do you need an entirely different setup for species with teeth?

I've always had luck early mornings on the back side of Mustang island. My leader set up is usually 8' tapered size OX super mono and 15" of 12# flouro tippet. I like to stay under 10' total leader and tippet due to it being so windy down here. I find it easier to cast with the wind opposed to against. I use mostly white/red clousers and some epoxy shrimp flies. Bright colors for murky water and I tie somewhat bulky clousers to get some sound in the water. Good luck and hope this helps.

Ok, thanks! that definitely gives me a starting point. By back side of mustang island do you mean the state park? I'm not very familiar with the area haha

Eary,,,eary in the morning as long as the water in clear to greening and NOT chocolate milk..Walk the south Jetty and fish to the point and back..cast past the rocks and back to you..at times you will see the fish in schools swim past you..
or Take the Jetty boat at 6am to the North Jetty side at st. Jo island and fish the rocks their starting at tip and work your way back to land..

Yes the back side of mustang island. You can look on google maps "satellite view" on the west side of hwy361 and there are many roads that will take u there. Just pic a spot and good luck.
