Went this morning early to beat the heat and the fishing was hard. Got six keepers but had to work for them. After one of the recent threads bemoaning the lack of info on the forum, I decided to do better at sharing my experiences. Now I'm pretty new at this and most of you know more than me but I remember not long ago when I needed any help I could get. So here goes.

Fished brush piles at Cooper lake. We have been doing pretty well on them until the last week or so. Today the fish were not cooperative. Fished in 20 FOW and didn't have much luck. Moved to a pile in 12 FOW and caught 2. Water was 85 degrees and I was a little surprised to catch them this shallow but I also knew of a small pile close by that was in 7 FOW. Caught 2 more on it!

At this point I was pretty close to some standing timber in 4 FOW so with little to lose I tried it. Caught one more! Fished several trees and didn't catch others so went back to 20 FOW and finished up. I am amazed at how shallow we caught them today but I am still learning.

All fish were caught on crappie buster feather jigs in chartreuse or blue.

Cooper in the summertime is notorious for developing a thermocline in the 10/12'depth range.

I did not know that. Does the water temp affect that? The water is still about 85 degrees.

I have read some about how to tell if the thermocline is there but may not know everything about identifying it. Caught some of the crappie and some sand bass at 16 ft so probably no thermocline yet but I will look for one.

Thanks.

The thermocline is not always consistant all over the lake but as the summer goes on and the water heats up it will. One reason it is so prevalent is that Cooper is a shallow lake.

Check out the standing timber in the mouths of the deeper eastside creeks.

Never get to fish Cooper enough, but love the lake when I could fish it.
Wish they can manage to maintain decent water level on that lake. The fluctuation of water level never helps the consistency of catching.
With that being said, I like fishing lake Benbrook, but also dislike fishing it for the same reason!
