Why do guys put a motor cover on their motors?

I see this everywhere!

Yep. Keeps them from getting scratched and keeps the road film off. I have a 2012 SHO that has a permanent "stain" on both sides of the cowling from road grime. Yamaha won't let their pros use motor covers, (this was a pro's) so maybe they'll replace this cowling for me. NOT!

I have a tuff skinz on my merc and would not be without it. Another nice thing about it is protection for when your nonboater whacks your cowling with his lure. Well worth the cost in my opinion.

What sensor does a motor cover effect? I could not stand there and hear a "tech" say that to me without leaving and taking my boat somewhere else!

I'm gonna bet it had to do with the motor over heating if there weren't vent holes cut in it.

Outboards are water cooled not air cooled. Granted it could hurt air intake if it had no vents.

He was probably talking about the O-2 sensor. This sensor has a lot to do with fuel mixture. What do they cost any ways.

Yes they are water cooled, but vents in the cowling also allow heat to escape the motor.
