How to flatheads strike a bait? They run like blues, or come towards me like channels? I'm tight lining the bank at hubbard and getting some strange hits, but my bait is intact when I check my lines. ??

I don't think you can qualify how a species of fish will fight.

About as many of the blues I catch swim toward me as channels do and the same for away from you.

I have only caught one yella personally and I didn't know I had a fish till I went to reel in and we were going to try a different spot. I have been in the boat when several were caught and the concensus is they will give it a few soft bumps before they take it.

Early spring and late fall very non aggressive they will pop your rod tip then nothing or a slow slight bend. Right before spawn tend to pop it and haul butt! Friaght trains!

That is a good video Drawout! I hit em before that I'm always nervouse they will drop it! Or I pick up rod and feel the fish eating my bait and put a little pressure on them it can make them a little more aggressive and take the bait hard.

Big Blue Cat "HAMMER" prey where as Flatheads just suck it up and walk off steady.
Which . . . IMO is why many people do not catch many Flatheads, especially of any size.

I saw a video once of a tank kept flathead that they recorded. They released a bream into the tank and when the flat decided to eat it smacked the bream but did not kill it. It laid right there watching the bream struggle onits side on the bottom. Then the bream kinda got itself together enuff to run and the flat smacked it again as if it were playing with its food. Then it watched the bream die over the next twenty minutes and finally ate it. The whole time from first strike to when it ate it was 45 minutes.

That would have been cool to see.

Point is still, Flathead do not bite like Blues and getting ahead of "the bite" is why folks ain't catch'n quality flatheads.
I learn things daily, but flathead pole fishing has its basics
Learn'em and you can hook'em

Most of mine have taken the bait in a couple of minutes or less dont get me wrong. But I have had a half dozen or so good ones take the hour to catch. My friends used to give me a hard time about wanting to swing at the fish before they really ran with it. Most will take it within the first minute though.
