Today my wife and I took our son to the DFW Bassmasters Youth fishing event at Joe Pool. I've never been to Joe Pool, but thought I'd take him out since his 2nd birthday is tomorrow. Last week we gave him his first fishing pole, a 2'6" Mickey Mouse pole we bought at Bass Pro. My boat stays at Fork, so we were bank beaters today (it's been a while since I did that).

My number one goal was to show him a good time, and work on those casting skills. When we got there, I realized that I had forgot the worms, so I made a quick trip back to Lynn Creek Marina and picked some up. While I was there I noticed there was some grass in there and the water looked pretty good. Nonetheless I took the worms back to Lynn Creek Park and we ended up catching a little perch. He took it to weigh in. His first fish to ever weigh in ended up being a .13 lb perch.

After we weighed in, I told my wife we should head back to the marina. So we did. Almost 10 minutes after we got there, we hooked a bass on a drop shot (thanks to Fork Guide Richie White for teaching me how to use one). We ended up catching the bass. I was beside myself. My son was going to weigh in his first bass during his first fishing tournament. So we filled up the weigh in bag I'd brought along and put the bass in. It ended up going .81.

My son finished the tournament in 6th place and got some free passes to the Dallas Zoo for his efforts. I'm incredibly proud of him for making it all the way till noon before he passed out for his nap. I'd like to thank the DFW Bassmasters for making this day possible.

I'm not sure what age most kids start fishing, but he's been going out on the boat with me since he was 6 months old. I know he's starting much earlier than I did. I think I went on my first trip with my Papa when I was 4.

Heck Yes my son turned 3 on the 21st and loves going in my boat....at our pond I let him fish solo.... he will whip that spiderman pole a good 20ytds with a 1.0 and 12lb big game....its amazing what they can do when you start them young
