This is a very important reminder not to push the limits. There will always be another opportunity to fish. No fish is worth putting your life or the lives of your friends at risk. I'm glad I read this in anticipation of my gulf trip this month.

Yep. I really wanted to try the Slayer out in the surf last week but high winds from the north can spell trouble. Glad they are ok. Lots of lessons to be learned from this.

I cannot stress enough the importance of watching the weather when fishing BTB. The north wind is a killer. Next stop Yuccatan, Mexico.

Good to see they had the radios and cell phones although you get far enough out the phones are no good.

I got hit once prefishing a tournament on Tampa Bay years ago. It was windy, stayed within 50 yards of spoil island and got hit so hard by microburst that it pushed me from a forward leaning paddling position into the wind, to leaning backwards in a split second. From going forward directly into the wind to a dead stop and then picking up spead going backwards as I paddled as hard and as fast as I could. Jumped out of kayak onto shallow oyster bar and pulled kayak onto spoil island. Three or four more seconds and I would have been in water too deep to touch bottom and would have been blown all the way to the other side. It only lasted 10 minutes or so but I will always remember it and how lucky I was to have been wearning thick soled wading boots. You never know the kind of water you'll have to wade in or out of and flip flops or bare feet will never work for me.
