I have a boat for sale and I have a guy saying he is interested, but wants me to fax him a copy of the title? Is that legit? Any harm in doing that?

That's very odd IMO Never had someone ask for that, why does he need that?

He's saying it's to borrow a little money at his credit union. I asked for credit union contact and a name.

if he is going to buy it doesnt seem odd , he has probly gone on goosechases where there wasnt a title or the title was not in the persons name selling the boat.

This title is not in my name, just got the boat a couple of weeks ago and it is to heavy for me to hand launch in ponds. Have to sell. Thanks for that insight though. Never thought of that.

Most folks would 1st pay the necessary sales taxes, fees and get the boat title legally in their name showing they fully own the boat, "then" they would offer it for sale. Can't really sell a boat with a prevous title on it if one exists, that according to the State is owned by someone else. You might find someone to take your the previous owner's title, but if you get reported, you would be surely not be legal as you are avoiding paying your sales tax.

I didn't know that. I just bought the boat a couple of weeks ago to fish private ponds, but it's to heavy to hand launch. I just haven't gone to TPW. The guy I bought it from signed it over to me. I assume the guy who buys from me will have no problem getting title transferred into his name. Am I wrong?

You have not paid your sales tax to TPWD. You have to do that when you get your name on the title. If you choose to be part of a sale without doing that, you could be breaking the law. You are not a legal broker or licensed dealer.

best thing is to contact TPW, tell them your story and ask them what to do...
information from the horses mouth is better than any other information..

I totally don't mean any offense to any of the parties involved, but what kind of boat is this? You're talking about it being too heavy to hand launch in ponds ect. And he wants the title to borrow money from his credit union? Just the fact that you were thinking it may be suitable for ponds makes me skeptical why he needs to borrow money for it. Most credit unions wont do a boat loan on less than $5k. So you either have the worlds most expensive jon boat, you bought a full on bass boat for a pond, or this is a scam. Either way, I wouldn't be selling a boat without my name on the title.

Its a tracker boat i dunno about the size but it doesn't have a motor on it. Frank is new to boat ownership and i believe he was asking a honest question he just bought the boat last week. Frank call tpw and see what they say about you situation and if someone want to barrow the money i feel bad for them because i know what your asking for it.
