In case you haven't heard, it was a stellar weekend to be fishing on Lake Ray Hubbard!
Got home on Wednesday afternoon from a work trip and was excited to pick up my new Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 55lb thrust with Ipilot from David @shut-up-and-fish! Spent the rest of the day on Wednesday and a few hours Thursday morning installing it. Thanks to the guys at Rockwall Marine for hooking me up with the right connections/breaker as well. Also, I learned that most sets of jumper cables are made with tinned wire, so I saved myself a few bucks by purchasing some 12' 6ga. cables and cut off the alligator clips. Thursday evening I was on the water for my first test run with the new Ipilot!
Tested the spotlock out and slabbed a few dozen whites while I chatted with Seafox Steve and his son who were slaying them! Great to see Steve back out, and hear that his wife is getting better after her accident!
Enjoyed a nice sunset on the way back to the ramp.
Friday I worked for most of the day, waiting for Tay to get home from her business trip. I had the boat hooked up and ready to go so all she had to do was drop her bags and pick up her rod! We went out and started where I had finished up on Thursday and it was nice to finally meet Rockwall Roy out there. Tay kicked my butt, catching twice what I was and a bunch of doubles too!
We stayed on fish fairly steady for an hour or so then went in search of some hybrids which we were unsuccessful in finding. We enjoyed another great sunset, and a few adult beverages to cap off a long week!
Saturday morning we fished with Mark (silverside). Started again where we'd been catching alot in 20-22fow. We marked alot of fish, but no takers. Just about the time we were getting ready to move I noticed birds working to the east of us, up shallow. We boogied over and switched to plastics. Caught several nice hybrids and some aggressive sandies! It turned into a boat show pretty quick so we decided to boogie south on the hunt again. Ended up back where we started and found Seapro Todd and CC there slaying them! We slabbed for a while before calling it a day and meeting Marks wife for lunch and my first trip to Snuffers!! An order of cheese fries, a green chili burger and a Lipitor shake for dessert later, we said our goodbyes (and a brief hello to Fishboy Frank who was preparing for his fish fry) and headed home to get ready for the Stars/Wings game! The Wings shutout the Stars 3-0, and I finally got retribution for the tail whipping Tay put on me out on the water! Our seats were great!
Sunday morning my buddy Gilbert and I hit the lake early and after a little searching, found that the Hybrids were doing exactly what they were doing the day before- pushing shad up shallow on windblown shoreline. The lake was like glass with virtually no wind, which made spotting fish that were busting bait very easy. Good to see Jeff Craft, Ruben, Championfish, JV and Plano Keith there. I thought Keith was going to start tap dancing on the front of his triton with the Ipilot. Glad to see Im not the only one who thinks that this thing is the cats pajamas! We were catching hybrids hot and heavy for a while mixed with some nice sandies on plastics. Nothing huge, but lots of action!
After things slowed, we headed back up and hooked up with Mark who was on a nice stack of whites. The pleasure boat traffic started picking up around 12:30 so we called it a day and headed in. Spent the rest of the day poolside with friends at the eagles club, and a cookout at our house afterwards! What a great weekend!
Sandies being caught deeper 20-22fow on slabs and hybrids up shallow on plastics! Best of both worlds! See yall on the water!
