I visited a friend last weekend and he served me crappie fillets for dinner. Needless to say, it was wonderful. So here I am always fishing for largemouth and white bass, but have no clue on how to fish for crappie. And I mean none. I tried crappie fishing last weekend and came up empty.

I'm really interested in learning. And I'd like to learn on Lake Lewisville. I have a 20' Skeeter bass boat. I'll even throw in a barbeque dinner if you're willing to show up and teach me how to catch these delicious creatures.

They are delicious. They taste good to other fish
as well. Therefore you normally find them next to
structure. (rock piles, brush, or anything underwater
where they can hide from other predator fish. Right
now they are in their spawning phase. You can find them
in creeks,and coves in water as shallow as 1 foot. However
this cold front will probably push them back into deeper
water. You will need a gps unit and a good sonar to be able
to find the underwater structure. When you find it mark it
with your gps so that you can find it in the future.
Minnows are good to use,and small jigs work as well.
The only sure way to learn how to catch them is to be able
to spend lots of time on the water.
I run a crappie guide service and they sometimes still
fool me. If you really want to learn, you can book a trip
with me and I will be able to give you tips,and techniques
that are proven to boat lots of fish. The money you spend on
a trip with me will save you lots of time and gas money in the future.

If you can get to a bank with cover right now, go! Fish around anything you see in the water... And anywhere else you can get to... Use a jig or minnow under a float and if you don't get a bite... Move... Repeat...
Concrete aprons around bridges and rocks shallow should be holding fish...shad are shallow on tawakoni now...

There's no crappie in Mono Lake used for the backdrop in the movie High Plains Drifter. But you got the drifting part right. One of the less glamorous methods but a highly effective way to find crappie is by drifting baits at varied depths in prime locations.

The hardest thing about catching crappie is locating them. Welcome to crappie fishing! Good luck!

right now all you need to ketch crappie is a small colorful jig ....18inches under the lil bitty pencil float
toss it along any bank with something in the water and move down the bank like you are worm ketchn for black bass
twitch a lil here and there and set the hook fast if you see anything that indicates even a nibble .....
coves and creeks and rocky shorelines produce well ....

Get prepared to hang up. I am new to crappie fishing myself, after a lifetime of fishing for smallmouth in Ozark streams (recent drought makes that just a memory). These crappie hang out in the most difficult cover imaginable. I watched a guy catch a nice limit at Lake Graham Tuesday and he was basically taking a jig and carefully working it through the tree, letting it fall off the branch. This requires a boat that will stay perfectly still in wind (a feature might will no do) He was only in 2 feet of water.
