Up until now, I've solely been a spinner reel guy but I'm fixin to get my first my baitcaster and after researching and talking to friends I'm torn between 2:

H20 Express from Academy or Abu Garcia Black Max

What do y'all think?

H2O mettle hands down. Much more durable and serviceable.

My first baitcaster was a Black Max back in 1994, great reel for me. Here is a question for you, right handed retrieve or left handed? I'm right handed but I use left hand retrieve reels never made sense to me to switch hands after the cast to use my left hand to hold the rod, when my right arm is stronger. Think about that before you buy.

I've have heard only good things about the mettle, whereas the black max I've heard some good and some terrible.

Black max is trash. The level wind will wear out quick and the handle will spin backwards next. Mettle is where it's at.

Today's Black Max reel is a far cry from the 1994 version.

Mettle is the better option of the 2 unless you want to pony up for something in the revo series from Garcia.

abu 5500c3 for a first reel, much easier to get backlashes out of (and trust me on this your gonna have some gooduns), great yet economical reel, easy to break down and lube, much easier to put line on (feeding thru and tieing to the spool), will cast and perform as well as any mid range reel out there.

I learned on an original 5000 and it sucked for the first couple of yrs with backlashes etc. I did learn how to use one effectively though then started moving up as I could afford it.

Get what feels best and comfortable to you
I fish with and prefer Abu Garcia I like the feel of them.
Baitcaster going come with a learning curve be prepared for backlash and birds nest don't get discouraged when it happens we all been there done that.

Mettle is a better reel tbh. I almost always would buy the reel model under the one I actually wanted. Then I finally spring for a higher end reel and wow what a difference. Drop a little more on a better reel and have less headaches and heartbreaks in the future.
