The last couple of days have been all about the BIG fish and playing the weather. Spring time is known for strong winds that sometimes make the fishing pretty tough. Add a couple of strong spring cold fronts and it's enough to drive any fisherman crazy. With this last front came the best gift of all for everyone, RAIN! Most people don't realize how much rain helps and plays a role into each bays ecosystem. Obviously to much can hurt, but we haven't been on that side of things in a long time. Hopefully everyone got enough rain to do a little good for there favorite bay system and all the farmers to get their crops up and going. Now for the fishing report.
Sunday Jeremy hit the water with his wife to take his newly acquired SCB for a spin and to dirty up the fish box. The winds laid just enough for him to find some decent water drifting in East Matty and they put together a good box. Drifting deep mud with scattered shell BreAnn hooked into a nice 27.5 inch trout that went just over 7lbs on the boga. They took a few quick pictures and then released her to fight another day.
Wednesday Nick was down fishing Baffin before things get to busy for us here in Matagorda. They were fishing just before the front hit and found were the monsters were hiding. After throwing top waters and corkies all morning with nothing to show for it, Nick put on ole faithful: a rattle cork and jig and their day quickly turned around. Within 2 hours the group had caught and released 5 trout over 25 inches. The highlight of the day came when nick stuck his first trout over 30 inches. She ended up going 30.5 inches and weighing just over 9lbs. Needless to say the taxidermist has already been contacted. Lewis also caught a great fish at 28.5 inches and right at 8.5lbs. They didn't catch many, but if you asked them it was one of the best day they've had on the water. Congrats to Capt. Nick Stillwell for breaking the 30in mark, I hope to join you officially very soon.
Things are really about to take off in Matagorda with the glass minnows and the full moon just around the corner. Get in touch with us if you'd like to get in on the action. Our summer dates May-July are really starting to fly off the calendar. This is the time of year that we are known best for when we wade with croaker.
