I don't know if its the pressure itself that the fish don't like or the conditions the pressure usually brings. Usually when there is high pressure it will be a blue bird day which seems to make fishing tougher and on lower pressure days it could be overcast or cloudy and I've heard that fish are sensitive to light (wheather that be true or not, I don't know) but I always wondered myself if It was the pressure and maybe they can feel It somehow or if it was the light that comes with high pressure that made the fishing tougher

I was told by a very smart man that it CAN BE vitally important, but isn't always. If the cows are grazing and not laying, if the birds are chirping and not quiet, if the land bound animals in general are moving around, the bass will be as well.

It may sound stupid but if I'm on the fence about going one day, I'll drive by a group or two of cows, look for hawks, listen for birds, etc and then decide.

Almost all of this animal activity is barometer related. A low or changing barometer and the animals get on the move, a hi or steady barometer and they tend to stay put.

Yes the pressure has a big affect on fish. When the pressure is high the fish will usually be tight to cover and will not want to move allot. Think about how you feel when you have a headache, you want to lay in bed and not move, you want your meals brought to you. Same with high pressure and bass. Low pressure will usually have them more active. I have charted my trips with the pressure for several years and this is what i have found.
The best pressure to fish is between 29.80 and 30.20. I will not go if it is higher than that. My biggest fish have always come in the 29.84 to 29.89 range. Hope this helps.

Yes but I don't look at it unless the fish are not active. If I feel like going fishing, I just go!

30.20 or above is usually a no bite day but not always.
It's 30.13 right now...and I'm staying close to my tree!

I read an article one time where a fish biologist basically said this: As the barometric pressure increases, plankton and other tiny creatures become less active and therefore small fish (baitfish, shad, minnows)that feed on them are not as active either. So the whole food chain slows down including larger fish like bass that feed on the baitfish. Just the opposite happens as the pressure decreases - the whole food chain activity increases.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Fish as many overcast days as you can.

I remember watching a video by Doug Hannon talking about fishing and how barometer relates. He talked about how most people prefer to fish when the pressure is low, because the bass are on the move and generally more active. But he talked about how he preferred a period of 3 or 4 days with stable, high air pressure before fishing. The reasoning being when the pressure is stable and hi, the bass don't move a lot. So, once you locate them, you are able to catch them in larger numbers than you would be, catching cruisers on a cloudy low pressure day.

This info is in regard to the ocean but I've applied it to inland bodies of water as well. The Fisherman's Ocean, best I've ever read in regards to offshore fishing.
