I have a friend that fishes a crappie pole and slip float for catfish I'll bet a four or five pound cat would put up a fight. Let me know if anyone has tried this.

I have done some slip bobber fishing for channels. I works pretty good. I use a medium light action rod with some big bobbers and a 1oz weight with a treble hook and punch bait.

Nope. I'm goin for monsters. Loosing the fish of a lifetime because a crappie rod broke....no good.

Iv got a 12ft crappie pole that is a blast, channel & crappie stuff same thing, heavy gear just takes the fun out.You aint lived till ya catch a 30# red or a 10# channel on lite stuff.

Thanks, all for your answers at least I am hearing from some one else that has tried it. I will not give up my abu but the pole seems worth a try.

I always consider going light when I read stories of monster cats caught "while crappie" fishing....with a minnow. And then I come to senses and tie on a live bluegill..on my 65lb test...with an 8/0 circle hook. lol...

I have caught 15-20lb carp on 4lb test, that's a blast. wink

Fishing for channels with an ultralight is awesome. Just keep your drag loose or you will experience one of the worst feelings in the world: setting the hook on something heavy only to break off the line in the next instant...

I recently picked up an 8' Pro Angler crappie rod for channel catting this spring. I've seen large flatheads caught on these rods.
