I used a fish easy on mine but really any finder with a transducer that can go on a trolling motor should work. My canoe set up was nice cuz it had holes where you could put oar mounts so that is where i mounted the monitor part... it was pretty nice...

Garmin Smart Cast might be good for a canoe.

I currently use a Humminbird Wide 100 portable on my Grumman canoe and it works fine. Has a suction cup to attach the transducer and even under full speed on the trolling motor it stays put. The portable unit is the one that runs off of 2 6V lantern batteries and comes in a convenient case that I can set on the floor of the canoe. I think I paid about 150 for it several years back. I think they might be cheaper now.
Those Fishin Buddies look nice and simple but they cost a little more.

dangermon,

You may want to consider an Eagle fishEasy2 portable. It has the transducer attached to the suction cup also.
