Sight-fishing is one of my favorite ways to fish. While it's not the same as stalking the saltwater flats, I still get the same thrill stalking clear water wherever I can find it. Carp, buffalo, gar, and catfish have been my targets last few times out. I've been using a flyrod for the carp, buff's, and gar. while I've had a couple cats on fly, most have come on bait.

Looks like fun Jamie. I'd like to come down in your neck of the woods so we can really put some points on the board. Maybe have a Basskickers weekend and put up a ton of points.

Hey Lusca how do you keep those gar from snapping your line? I had a bout a 4ft slam a chatterbait and got to fight it for about 3 mins. Got it to the side of the yak to get ready to land it and it took one last run and snapped my line!

What river is that? those pics are beautiful I'd like to go see that and try is out. Seems to be just as important for good scenery as good fishing for me anymore.

Hey Nathan, these small ones I often just take my chances especially since I was rigged up with line and a small fly for carp. I did lose a couple and it cost me a big carp when I failed to retie after one of these gar. When I go after the longnose on purpose I use a heavier mono leader, 30# usually. When I'm after big alligator gar I use 100# or heavier mono or more often use wire leader. Those larger longnose tend to be a real handful when you try to land them! I've caught a few 4' plus and they almost always end up leaving me bleeding shocked

This happened to be on the Bosque River. I have private access from the property I lease for hunting. The downside is I end up having to drag and portage a lot. There is very similar scenery on many of the spots I fish along the Brazos and many of it's tributaries...notably the Paluxy and the Nolan in addition to the Bosque. I even have some super secret "hot spots" on the Trinity. The Trinity gets a bad rap, but I've found some really scenic spots with very good fishing.

Forgot to add this pic of some of the shiner's that are prevalent in this stretch and a baby gar I caught bare-handed.

Greatness! Man I bet those carp and buffalo are awesome on the fly. I have trouble landing them on conventional gear! You da man, Jamie!

Very nice! banana

There is no such thing as sight fishing around here as the water isn't clear enough to see anything!

Gar on a Flyrod, that has to be a trick. Great trip.
