Ive been interested in throwing flies for bluegill or other sunfish for some time, and made the jump today. I'm a completely clueless noob, but read enough to figure out to look at 4 wt rods. Well an aquantance had a basically new 9' 3wt and a brand spanking new reel with line and tippet for a great price so I jumped on it. Look foreword to reading up on all the info yall post and catching my first fish on the fly! Thanks!

Welcome aboard! I personally can think of no better way to pass my angling time than bluegilling.

I just don't get tired of panfishing. Period. Doesn't matter how hot or windy or rainy if they're biting I don't go home!

Welcome Matt - and you're gonna love it. However, be prepared - I built a 2 wt. for bluegilling and the first fish I caught on it was a bass that would probably go 2+ lbs.! It was a blast!
In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

I'd be ok with a 2lber as my first fish on the fly! Hahaha. Got to learn to cast it first!

Get a casting instructor and cast in the yard first to get the basics. I bought my first fly rod in March 2009 and someone cancelled on a steelhead trip. I got asked to go, and the first fish I caught on a fly was 9+lbs. I've been hooked since, but I still love catching 'gills and rios. I use a 4wt to fish mostly, and I have reeled in some really nice bass with it. Many over 3lbs. You may never go back to the dark side once you start with a fly.

Thanks for the welcomes and info. I'm taking it this evening (going catfishing with a few friends) and I'm going to practice with it. I'll be looking into a class later this summer but for now I'm just going to test it out on my own.

Google You Tube Fly Rod Casting and look at some of the videos.
