Do you guys like swimbait hooks for soft plastic swimbaits or open hook jig heads? I feel like the only time I can get a good hookset with a swimbait hook is when the fish smokes it. Open hook jig heads, while very prone to getting hung up, get me hooked up every time. I've tried several brands of swimbait hook (LFT, Trokar, Owner), but I still have the most luck with a plain jig head.

That's all I use on my swimbaits 95% of the time and have no problems.

I cut a slit in the belly so that more hook can be exposed and plastic will not wad up on hook.

+1..

Making sure you have the right rod/reel/line is just as important as the hook.. especially when you're skin hooking them. Long casts are usually part of the equation for me when I'm throwing hollow bodies. To give yourself the best shot at staying hooked up consistently, you need a long rod and a high speed reel to pick up enough line to drive a big swimbait hook home. If you're skimping on a part of the set up.. you'll hook some fish that will throw your bait on the first jump because of the large diameter of extra strong single swimbait hooks. If there's much give, you're not going to drive a thick hook into the bone of a big fish's upper jaw when they inhale it.

I like a 7:1 highspeed reel because it will help pick up the slack some of those fish knock into your line when they hit it.... Which is of course is part why we.. or at least I throw them. grin

I was using 7'6 rods with extra fast tips to allow them to choke on it and they seemed to work well.. but I've been throwing the the Dobyns 806HSB rod since last fall and it will be hard to step back from an 8' rod now.. You can launch whatever is on them a country mile and pick it all back up on the hookset.

75% of the time I'm throwing them on 25lb flouro and the other 25% is on braid... Anyting below 30lb mono has too much stretch for my liking.

Noooow... back the original topic... Hooks. After bending some gammies and eagle claws out, a buddy turned me on to the Owner Beast Hooks and it is the only one I have confidence in when I'm looking for a big bite. It's all in your set up.. and all the pieces have to fit together to finish the puzzle...

Just my $.02.. I hope it helps!

Listen to Evan, he's the man! Pretty much nailed everything. Although i don't use braid for them, everything else is spot on!

I will add one more piece of advice....when coming through the belly of the bait with the hook point....come through at a 90 degree angle. This will also allow the bait to clear and not wad up causing you to miss fish on the hookset. I do this with all Texas rigs and when Texposing the hook.

owner beasts

I even throw the a-rig with the baits skin hooked with these. I haven't had any problems with hook ups (since if they hit it, they crush it).

This is good stuff. The Owner Beasts are the best I've found. The Trokkar weighted Swimbait hooks are probably a second for me.

Only change I would make to Evan's recommendations is the reel speed. I would prefer to throw a slower speed reel - as slow as I can get it - to slow roll the Swimbaits and keep them in the strike zone longer. It's always easier to speed up than slow down IMO, and the slower speed elicits more strikes (especially the bigger the Swimbait).

Not saying you can't catch fish without special setups, but swimbaits def get easier when you throw them on the right equipment.

Yeah, that pretty much sucked seeing your bait come flying back at you with the hook straightened out. That fish was a hoss frown

Thanks for the help guys. I just realized that I wasn't accounting for the diameter of the swimbait hooks and the power needed to drive the home. That's why I was only getting hooked when a fish smoked my swimbait. Light strikes coupled with the softer rods I typically use don't drive that thick hook into their jaw. Time for a new rod!
