I love throwing a spinner bait and usually have great success. With that being said, on Sunday I lost 3 good bass along with one that would've been my personal best. All three bass came out of the water and spit the spinner bait back at me. Very frustrating. I was using a medium action spinning rod setup. Did I not set the hook hard enough? Any help would be great.

Thanks!

Try a trailer hook. I use one about 90% of the time unless i'm in really heavy cover. That is just the way it goes sometimes though. welcome

Check to make sure that the lure is functioning properly, just check it over make sure no bends, and that the hook is sharp enough

Get a heavier action baitcasting rod.

I would use a med/hvy rod for a spinner bait to really set the hook into the fish

I actually think it is a medium/heavy. I will have to look.

One fish I caught earlier in the day bent it bad. Instead of the metal wire being shaped like a triangle it was bent completely straight. I just bent it back to triangle shaped. Hook should be sharp because I just bought that lure.

I think that maybe I wasn't setting the hook hard enough. When the fish were hitting it, I just started realing it in, instead of giving it a good yank. Then, when they jumped they spit it out. I will try adding a trailer hook too.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like their biting down on it but you are not moving the bait once it's in their mouth. You have a stretch factor depending on actual line type and size, rod action, and length of cast. Very sharp hooks help to overcome a portion of that but you still have to move the bait once the fish clamps down on it.

Part of the problem is, I just started kayak fishing. I'm a little worried about giving a good yank for fear of back flipping out into water lol

In addition to all the other good advice, I think part of the problem may have been that you let the fish jump. When the fish is out of the water it is easier for it to shake free from the hook. You can stop most jumps by moving your rod tip close to the water. In a kayak, just be sure to hold your rod low to the water and reel faster. That should stop most of the jumping. Other than that, set the hook good and keep the line tight. Good luck!

Yea that would be an issue LOL. You might try a stiffer rod, and a shorter rod. Like an earlier poster said it's important to keep them submerged. Watch your line and if you see it rising stick the rod down as much as possible.

I lost a good Bass on a spinner bait once. Took a good look at the bait and checked the hook to see if it would hang the thumnail as I drug it across. Wow, there was the problem some dummy put a small piece of tubeing over the point of the hook. Joke was on me.
