From the best we can tell it is 100% longnose. We looked at some examples of hybrids and there about seems to be more broad at the end. If you look at the additional pics on the link there are a couple of good shots with a side view. We sent the pics over to the texas wildlife dept and they thought it was longnose... It is kind of hard to believe though because of the size. There is also a good side by side with a smaller longnose 50incher on the attached write up and some good shots of alligator gar we caught on the same trip. I know Kirk Kirkland is on this message board I would like to hear his opinion.

Congrats! Superb angling and superb write up. Awesome! "I took one of the buffalo rods and simple changed out the small J hook for a bigger one and put a few small chunks of carp on the bottom." Time and time again, the bigger Longnose are caught on the bottom. I learned this years ago. I've caught some big Longnose as well, I didn't realize the record was around 50lbs. Interesting. This is 100% a Longnose gar btw, no doubt about it. Again....congrats!
Recent Notables: 40lb Flathead, 30lb Carp, 25lb Buffalo.

@ Stnkb8 that's a big fish! 63in is longer than this one. The girth on this one was 24in.. I think it was full eggs. The official record is just over 50 lbs! You may have been right there. You should post a picture.

Hey I did want to mention that ALL of the alligator and longnose gar we caught on the trip were catch and release. I had a few people ask what we did with the other fish shown on the link I listed in the first post. The only fish killed were common carp and a buffalo. We caught a bunch of Carp and buffalo while we were gar fishing but let them go as well only keeping one at a time for cut bait.
