What do you mean by in the trees? Are you flipping deep standing timber or are you fishing brushpiles and laydowns on humps, creek channels and ledges? For flipping get a flipping jig, for working offshore structure by casting use a football.

For me, it depend on how deep of water you are fishing, and how thick the cover.
if you are fishing lay downs, brush piles, rockpiles, etc in deeper water I'll make long casts and cover ground with a football jig I chose a size appropriate for the depth and amount of wind, anytime im fishing main lake points, humps, creek channel swimgs, etc.
if I'm fishing a stumpy flat in shallower water i'm going to pitch to each piece of standing wood with a flippin jig. there might be spots within each area where i'll mix it up.. for example if i get bit in a brush pile while probing with a fb jig i might follow up with a flippin jig cause i feel i'll lose less of these in the brush, and be able to work it deeper into the cover.

Thick brush in Deep Water, I would cast a 3/4-0z Flipping Jig. You will lose those Football Jigs in real thick brush piles.
