Weather and water heating up. Still getting a good early buzzbait bite. Must start at first light. Also catching a few on watermelon wacky worm. Fish the points with weeds and deepwater close by. Weekend trips netted 10-14 bass before 9am. Then the bite slows and get out the CR. Work the deep water in this same area. You must find the ditches, tank dams, and humps. Even tree rows will hold fish this time of year. Best bait has been watermelon baby brushhog with the tail dipped in chartruese. This small plastic looks good in Ray Roberts water and you will catch an occasional fish while swimming it to the boat. Be aware of any resistance when reeling in as the fish will take the bait and you hardly feel it.
Thanks to Jim Killham of Denton and Ben Gilmore of Washington, D.C. They really enjoyed the buzzbait. One of these also learned not to bring 8# test line to Ray Roberts. This lesson cost him his first two bass and two lost buzzbaits. I will throw no less than 15# test. If a fish goes down into the weeds, hold him tight and take the boat to him. Don't give him any slack but don't try to rip him out of the weeds. Most of the time, he will swim out.
I will be doing sandies and crappie Thursday. Lots of catfish on top of water catching the grasshoppers. Looks as if the grasshoppers will take over the lake soon. As you may recall, the last few summers, the grasshoppers will cover the water and the standing timber for a few days. Most of the fish that are surfacing are catfish. I will get out a spinning reel with a cork and catch me a few. Lots of fun.
Weather report says a high of 88 degrees Saturday! Good luck to you TFF tournament fishermen. I will be fishing a 12 hour night tournament at Texoma Friday night. If I regain my strength Saturday, I plan to come to your weigh in.
