Hope someone can help. I did water pump kit replacement on my 1999 115 Johnson. When I tested it would not go into forward gear it went into reverse just fine. After doing some looking around in my repair manual I noticed that the shift rod has a about a 45 degree angle. Should this angle in the rod be oriented towards the boat or back toward engine.I now have it toward engine and it goes into forward but only if I move shift lever quickly forward. I adjusted on linkage as well.Basically i just want to know the correct orientation of the shift rod and any other helpful advise. Thanks for any help.

Hope you did`nt tighten up the shift shaft. Seen this many times. Screw shift shaft in till stops, then back it up 7 turns. The offset next to shift shaft connection hole always goes forward.

I took lower unit back off and adjusted to 7 turns. Also found a rubber grommet that the shift rod should have been routed through. It works great so far. Thanks Performance outboards and chikenfrie and gary purdy. Its guys like you that make this forum so valuable.
