so sunday i was fishign a tournament and about 1 mile from teh ramp i think i blew my motor. was going along at about 5300 rpm maybe as much as 5500 and all of a sudden i lost power and heard a loud noise almost like i got something around the prop and was cavatating. came off plane and was still kinda loud and clunky sounding so the next thing i thought is the gears are gone in the lower unit. shut it down trim up put in gear and turn the prop. locks up as normal so figured the lower unit is not the problem. trim it back down and start it again, sounds like clunking/clanging/ rattling inside the engine. shut it down and thats it. had a mercury mechanice replace some reeds about 3 months ago. could something he did have come loose and jacked up my engine. i figure if i bring it back to them and thats what happened they would never admit to cover their ars. should i take it to someone else to have it checked out, but will the original guy then say someone else looked at it and they cant say that the work they did was the probelm? what should i do with this thing, any ideas on what went out in this thing?

That's a hard one, chances are if it is their fault they won't tell you and if it ends up being a rebuild do you want them to work on it if they caused the problem??? I would do what Steve says and then post what they have to say and maybe someone here can determine if their story holds water and help you to decide how to proceed. But if you do decide to get someone else to look at it take it to Ronnie over a Texas Machine Works he is an honest guy that does great work I know its a long drive but you will be glad you did!

Look into a new motor.I spent 4000 on my 99 200 efi before I made the leap into a new one.well worth the 12000 on new pro x s. I save a ton on gas and oil
