Check out this image from my Humminbird 998c with Trolling Motor Mounted Transducer. Can you see the school of Crappie??? Here was a couple other cool shots from the day. The Benefits far outweigh any negatives. Like 100' of coverage that I have selected in 5' of water. 20° Sonar would have been around 1.67' of coverage and 60° would have been 5' of coverage and Down Imaging in Wide Setting would have been about 7.5' of Coverage and SI adds more plus positive ID to which side the data is from.

That's one of the things most people focus on the obvious returns...trees, structure, rocks, cars, bridges...When they should focus on where the fish are related to those items and if there are even any of them there. Humminbird does some of the best job of showing fish because of the balance of side imaging sonar returns because they do not have multiple transducer crystals firing at the same time and doesn't over power the strong returns and shows fish easily. This was done with no SI Enhance and that makes fish 100 Times easier to spot another Humminbird Exclusive. Hope this Interpretation Helps...it's all in training your eyes to learn how fish look and you can start telling species by the shape and how they are positioned to structure. I use side imaging as a fish finder not a structure finder and especially on the trollling motor for it's huge coverage area...you would never had seen the Bass, Gar and Catfish if you were running DI or 2D sonar...that's the huge power of Side Imaging! Also DI shows the fish below the boat when actually they were on the left side of the transducer not directly below or they would have been picked up on both sides of the SI readings.
