I fish both lakes frequently in the late winter/spring but after that it's mostly just Lake Somerville. The price of fuel @ $4 buck a gallon is gonna make fishing closer to home a necessity!

This was the last Thursday "run up the creek" paddle trip for the 2012 spring creek fishing. We started the spring time creek fishing with a tough kayaking trip up the Yegua when the lake was still 3 feet below normal level and had to drag the kayaks halfway across the lake bed to the creek.

Next trip was a easier paddle up Nails Creek when the lake was right at normal level. I followed that Nails creek paddle trip up with a solo journey to the head waters of Birch Creek when the lake was about 3.5 feet above normal.

The last Thursday in March it looked like I was going to go solo again but Jamie Hackett the Lake Somerville state park director had other plans for the day. It seems that as a reward for all their good work over spring break her staff was going on a fun little paddle trip.

We first considered paddling down the Yegua but since the lake was 4.5 feet high and the creek flooded we chose the safer route from Flag pond down the cut to the creek and then up Nails creek to the trailway bridge. It turned out to be a good choice and an easy paddle.

It's probably a good thing I don't work for the state park because when these folks do their jobs they hardly ever get to enjoy the park the way I do by paddling up the creeks and fishing.
