Pulled all of the carpet out of the floor of my dad's aluminum boat and want o use tough coat, but the glue is being a pain. I tried mineral spirits, adhesive remover, and sanding a small area. None are very effective. Is there anything I can put on it to soak in and make this stuff easier to scrape off?

On my fiberglass boat it was just a bunch of elbow grease and a 100 count box of razor blades.

get goof off, do it outside, gal at lowes is not very much.
used this to remove the contact cement in my champion and it worked great.

get 2-3 different sizes of scrapers so you can get in all the tight places.

Here's what I do....(ain't pretty but it works) Get a side grinder, small or large does not matter. Install a wire brush on the side grinder, Dress yourself in a good rain jacket with hood. Apply ducktape around the wrist and face opening to close any gaps. Down a pair of safety glasses and a dust mask. Useing the side grinder in a dry mode go over the glued area removing glue as you go........it makes for a lot of dust, and debry..........BUT IT GETS THE JOB DONE. I would never use any kind of liquid to soften the glue, as it olny makes for a bigger,,,,,,,,mess..............Shop vac the debry...you are done.

Thanks for all the input, I like the 4" angle grinder idea. I have done a lot of metal fab over the years so grinding dust don't bother me. I knew my fellow TFFers would have good suggestions.

Lacquer thinner on aluminum works better than acetone.

I know this is an old thread but I found it looking for answers so maybe someone else will... I am removing the carpet in my Procraft 170 to install Monstaliner (thanks doctorxring). I tried the grinder: DEFINITELY not pretty and very difficult to control. I had seen a scraper attachment for my Rockwell multi-tool I had purchased from Lowe's to remodel my bathroom and tried it out... UNBELIEVABLE! It peels the adhesive away like butter. If you are any kind of DIY'er, (which you would have to be if you are tackling removing boat carpet :P) you can for sure justify getting one of these tools. If you don't wanna spend as much even Harbor Freight has put out one of these tools and I think it runs about $35. Just finish up with MEP to get the little bit of gunk left. You won't be sorry scraping this way and sounds like you won't find a better way to do it either.

On my old Fiberglass Skeeter I used a wire wheel on a drill. Just keep it moving.

I used an old chisel to get the major chunks off and then the grinder with 36grit paper to remove the rest. Was actually quite simple.
