I'm still grinning ear to ear over my trip yesterday! It was tough for me to decide where to go in part due to the strong winds and wanting to avoid the spring break crowds. I never saw another person all day, but the wind was brutal at times. The carp were spawning, muddying up the water in some of my usually productive spots. I was beginning to question if I should have tried elsewhere, but soon I caught this largemouth. I lost a couple nice ones after that about the same size and was kicking myself. I switched to my old standby jig/craw and caught a couple more smaller largemouth. Then I hooked a nice brownie! That pretty much made my day and anything after that would be icing on the cake! In the back of my mind though, I started thinking of a particular pool nearby where I've often caught nice spotted bass. I've managed to catch the trifecta before, but they've been smaller fish. I anxiously eased to the pool, quiet as I could and made a long cast to avoid spooking the fish. Sure enough they were there. I ended up catching several spotted bass topped by this respectable 15 3/4" one. The next pool I caught a couple more small smallmouth, a couple small largemouth, and this nice channel cat even jumped all over my jig. I really couldn't imagine it getting any better, but the Brazos often surprises me in unexpected ways. I was actually on my way to the truck and only pausing briefly to cast here and there when I saw a BIG bucketmouth inhale and do that swirling, slashing take. The one that often results in me yanking back hard on instinct often taking the bait away from the fish and leaving me shaking...nerves frazzled. This time I was lucky and the battle was on! I thought I was home free when she came out of the laydown she was in. But she dove under the yak and hung up in some wood on the opposite side. I eased up on the pressure some and finally worked the line free. Everything held and I landed this beauty.
