Went to the local pond, the bite is picking up.

Saw Old Lucky, caught a few bassgills a greengill and a couple of dinkgills!

I forgot my ruler, so my green will just have to show his colors here!

All fish were caught using these:

No, I am growing meal worms (and now red wigglers!). The bugs you see in the pic are 'super' worms, not meal worms, but both can be found at PetSmart. BAF and others suggested I try grasshoppers, which I find to be a pain in the a$$, but when at PetSmart looking for some a girl was feeding these 'Superworms' to their retail stock. I asked if they sold them, and they do.

5 bucks for 50! And boy do they work!!!

Grasshoppers yes they do work good we used to catch them and use it for bait back in country with cane pole. They are good bait.

Wow $5 for 50. I need to get on some of them. They're much cheaper than the Canadian Crawler that I'm buying to catch bluegills.

I don't think they catch as many species of fish as do worms (crawlers or wigglers), but they are absolutely killer on gills'

They (and meal worms as well) are especially deadly when fishing under tree cover! My guess is that fish just think they are larva falling out of the trees..

The larva guess makes sense to me. What are you feeding the meal worms? Are they reproducing or do they have to become adults like beetles?

It's very easy. You buy meal worms (not giant which are usually sterile) and just throw them in a box filled with oats, a couple of toilet paper rollers and carrots. And yes, they have to become beetles...once there are about 5 or so beetles running around, it doesn't take long for the colony to quickly grow.

It's pretty simple, and although my meal worm farm is small right now, I easily have over 300 from an initial batch of 25. I'm not sure they will be as effective as Superworms, which is a totally different type of worm. Giant meal worms are meal worms that have been roided out and are a bit larger. Most meal worms only grow to 1/2" to 1" and are GREAT for panfish.

Youtube has a lot of info regarding growing meal worms.

Thanks drrouter. Looks like I might have a new hobby and bait.

Maybe no more black dirt in my nails.
