With Lake Fork being down some 6.5 feet and no grass the Hobie Mirage type Kayak seems like a great unit. My question is how would they handle the grass that is the norm on Lake Fork. Would I be better off looking at a paddle SOT. I live in Wolf Creek and would most likely never venture of of the area.

I used my mirage drive all summer out there last year and it was extremely low. You will be fine.

It should handle just fine. I fished there all last summer and fall with Shaun on the forum. He had an Outback and had no issues but we didn't have to worry about the grass because there wasn't any. I was using a regular sit on top and it would drive me crazy on a windy day to look over at him while I was paddling and he was fishing. One of the great things about the mirage drive is that your hands free. I just picked up a Pro Angler this past weekend and can't wait to get back out there.

How does the drive system handle the grass?

There wasn't any where we fished. If you have a bunch of grass over by you then I think you have a gold mine!

No grass here for a year but it will be back sooner or later. I think the Mirage may be the way to go but I really worry about how it handles the grass. I would rather paddle than have a system that is useless in the grass. Especially considering the cost difference.

The Hobies come with a paddle if you need it. You can use the mirage drive in a couple of feet of water. I paddled the Pro Angler last weekend and it wasnt that bad.

I've run my PA through Grass sticks and other clumps of unseen stuff without any problems. If you get it caught up you can pull it up and clean it off with little effort.

Which model should I look at. I will only be fishing Wolf Cove about 90% of the time. I will also be fly fishing as well as traditional bait casting. I weigh about 190 and am 5"9

The Outback is a good boat or if your looking into the ultimate fishing boat then look into the Pro Anlger. Just depends on if you have a budget.

For almost all the grass I've been in the mirage kicks rear right through. I fish Ray Roberts a lot and focus on fishing grass. The mirage does fine. Last year I got back in a creek in my Outback and got in to some thick, snotty, matted moss. The mirage drive chocked down in it so I pulled out the paddle and went on thru. If you have concerns with not being able to use the mirage drive for your applications, you should not.
I just got a Pro Angler a few weeks ago and haven't had it in the grass yet. But I did just buy a 275CM paddle and it paddles tremendously better then the stock 240cm paddle.

If you ever get over here by Ray Roberts and want to try mine give me a shout. Heck if you wait a couple weeks I'll be down there at Fork pretty regularly and we can put it in the grass down there by you .;)

Whoa now it's the Hobie tag team! I'll bring my Wilderness Systems Commander 140 out for you to try out as well. Stable, comfortable, low maintenance, durable, and no pedals/flippers to get caught in grass or to tangle up all that line you'll be stripping while tossing flies...; > )
