Highway 16 is changing with all the oil/gas 18 wheelers/rigs on it. Made a 1 day trip down there last Saturday. I missed most of the heavy earlier rain but the road was wet, and the dirtiest I every seen it. The big trucks have made several miles with the grooves in the highway, that create some tire hydoplaning fun. Its worse than before. You will also get a dried, gray painted film on your boat, that may take more than a few cleanings. Seen a good looking black bass boat at the Zapata gas station, I think it was black, but, it was now definitley the worst highway gray I have ever seen on a boat, ever!
So, if rain is in the forcast, it may be wiser to take 35 through Laredo. Just a heads up.

Always wiser to take 35 to Laredo. Driven 16 a few times and never again. Got way way worse gas milage and almost hit about 8 deer, the raod was awful and..
35 to Laredo for me... no stops, put her on cruise and head on in.

we drove 35 down to Laredo and made it from new braunfels to the hotel in 4 hrs. Drove 16 back, and after getting behind a few oilfield trucks, and driving slower bc of potholes in the road, it added about 25 min to our trip.
Was recently told by a fellow fisherman that he hates driving through Laredo, and I could easily understand why, but man it sure was smooth.
Conversely, I have also gone through 3 rivers and into George West, taken 59 to Freer and 16 down. South of freer 16 isnt bad at all. Seems like SA to Freer on 16 is rough.

35 to Laredo for me... no stops, put her on cruise and head on in. That's what I keep trying to tell folks, but some still insist 16 is faster. I've been both ways, several times and from Houston, 35 is the only way to go.

Only thing that makes me nervous is the odds of being rear-ended in/around laredo and the possibility of it being an under or non-insured motorist

You can always take the loop around Laredo once you get there

It depends what time you're going to be through Laredo. Laredo during rush hour is not fun.

I just got back from Falcon a week ago and timed it. I made it from Sugar Land to Zapata in 5 hrs. That is going 59 to 16.

This may be what you are talking about on the loop, but there is a brand new section without a stoplight or anything. From Zapata on 83, you turn right at the first blinking light past that big bridge you cross at the Rio Bravo exit, go down about 1/4 mile to the stop sign, take a left, and it will come to a dead end at 359 or something like that. Take a left and you are right back to the Bulluck loop (20). Puts you on 20 just South of the airport, close to the Wal-Mart. They are building a bridge right there where you won't have to deal with those couple lights to get on the new section. It saved us quiet a bit. An older couple there told us about it. There isn't any signs up for it yet. From the looks of it, they just openend it.

quick question. i live south of 35 so its kind of pointless to take that route. but i plan on taking 59 to Freer. Then should i get on HW 16 from there or stay on 59 until i get to Laredo?
