A buddy of mine sent me this picture. Reportedly caught from Mississippi River, 215-lbs., 7 feet 11-1/2 inches long with a girth of 40 inches. They said it was caught on a walleye jig? Hair on the jig got entangled in its teeth? Anybody out there seen any articles on this?

Good morning Redfin, your up with the roosters this a.m. I always wonder what folks do with these big ole rough fish after they catch em. Most folks I know won't eat 'em, and I've never seen any mounted on a wall. I've eaten carp patties once and fried gar once, wasn't half bad. roadtrip

I think JP posted this pic a while back and then the big debate started on why you would want to kill a fish that old...... It was around spring time I think..... ------------------

"I always wonder what folks do with these big ole rough fish after they catch em." It's a shame this Gator Gar was killed. Anyway, most true rough fish anglers just catch and release. After you catch a 10-18lb bass, what's the next step up in freshwater angling excitement? 30-40lb Carp, 40-60lb Buffalo, 60-200lb Gar. ------------------ Wanna catch something bigger? Hey Roadtrip, You've really never seen a gar mounted on a wall? Go to the Texaco in Bremond, it's on the wall in the back . I believe it was caught out of the Brazos like most other monster gar caught in Texas.

Here is what I know for sure down here around Falcon Lake in STX.
1. We have plenty of those big gar. Plenty, and anybody that is concerned about them becoming extinct or something, should come down here and get some of our extras for relocation.
2. Down here they eat them. They are called Katan or Catan in the local fish markets here and in Mexico. They are about as expensive as anything sold in these markets. They taste OK, but personally I would rather eat something else.
3. I've got a friend that has shot several over 200 pounds with a bow, and one close to 300 pounds. It's hard to find a certified scale big enough to weigh them.
4. Again I want to stress that we have plenty down here.
5. You want some excitement? Pitch a jig in front of one that is going by the boat. If he takes it, and you have on 80 or 100 pound braid with too tight of a drag, you are liable to lose your rod. If your drag is backed off a little, you lose all of your line quickly.
6. I don't think they really school up, but I have seen hundreds of them start surfacing in about an acre size area, and most of them were bigger than 5 feet. This will definately shut down the bass bite when they start doing this.
Here is what I have been told, but haven't personally seen it or verified it.
1. Commercial fishermen on Falcon catch several each year over 400 pounds.
2. Bass fishermen have reported seeing some in the 15 to 16 foot range that surfaced next to their boat. I've heard that a bunch.

I was reading an outdoor life article many years ago about big alligator gars. There was a story about a guy who owned a wrecker and kept hooking and losing a giant Trinity River gar. One night he backed the wrecker up to the river, rigged a hay hook on the wrecker cable with a calf for bait. after putting his line (cable) in the river, he lft to run a trotline. Upon returning, he found the wrecker gone, and from the drag marks on the bank , he deduced it had been pulled into the river! Hey icepick, wheres Bremond, if i ever pass thru there, I'll stop at the Texaco and check that out.

My uncles shoot 'em with bows down on the Colorado river, 200 #s + and they have a few heads mounted like deer, in fact they added antlers, so right next to their jackalope they've got a huge garalope!! Pretty cool lookin'.

Hey dmunsie, you ought to go down to falcon and try to get one of those 15-17 footers. Make sure you take your camera. I saw a guy catch one over 100 lbs on the trinity. It was on a fishing show back in the 70's or thereabouts. "Outdoor Life with Homer Circle". It looked like a fight with a deep sea fish. Looked like lots of fun. If it was me I'd take a picture and throw it back in as quick as I could! They don't call em "alligator" gars for nothing!

We used to throw a nylon rope for them when I was a teenager down on the medina river below the lake dam. There were so many of them in there it was scary at times Pull em up along side the boat and shoot them with a 22. An old man used to pay us 10 cents a pound I think for them I cant remember tho.maybe it was a nickle hrmm lol anyway I never asked the oldtimer what he did with them tho. I know we shot a couple down there that was as long as our 12 foot john boat. 3 teenage boys trying to lug that big sob in the boat was hilarious. Hawke
