Anyone use their cranking battery for the 3rd trolling motor battery when the changed from 24V to 36V because they did not have room for a 4th battery.?

Wouldn't you risk running your cranking battery down to the point that you wouldn't be able to get your big motor started at the end of the day?

Sounds like the better option is to just stick with a 24v motor? Besides cranking batteries are usually a different style than the trolling motor batteries are.

Besides risking not being able to start the motor your electronics would be alot more susceptible to RF Noise from the Trolling motor being hooked to the same batteries that power them

One of my friends does all the time and has for many years. He has a 200 Merc and hb electronics. He has never had a problem that I have heard about.

that is a bad idea if you have some type of short it could damage electrical parts on your motor an if the trolling motor pulls it down it wont have the power it needs in the cranking of the motor good luck.

That may be so but he has been doing it and fishing tournaments for over 10 years on this rig.

Yes. It will work but with consequences....
1) You may not be able to hook up and use the trolling motor's internal universal sonar.
2) You will need to get/check hourly a battery monitoring voltage gauge to ensure you do not discharge the cranking battery below 50% state of charge. (this is good practice in any battery setup)
3) True 'cranking batteries' will give you poor performance on a slow discharge like a TM.... so you will have to purchase a compromise "dual purpose" battery giving up some cranking amps to get some reserve minutes.
4) You will have little emergency cranking battery power late in the day if your motor suddenly gets hard to start. Better not use this setup for off-shore or lonely isolated lakes with no cellphone access.
(an electrical short is going to trip a breaker or blow a fuse, so there is not really an additional risk in this setup for damaging your motor.)
