My water pump or impellor has quit working on my 1978 Johnson 150hp. How can I tell which one is out (impellor or water pump)? Also is it a difficult job to repair this myself? Thanks for any advice.

Hi, the impeller is the working mechanism of the water pump( ie; same thing). No , not hard to do , requires taking lower unit off though. Best to get a manual and follow the steps or have someone in the know to help you. After you do it once, you'er an expert

I did my '94 120HP last fall. I've had it done by a shop the first time and I think it's pumping better this time. I can't tell you what I did different, but whatever it was, it's working great.

I agree, the manual is required. Also, if you get the entire rebuild kit, ~$60, you can preassemble stuff before hand. I got my manual over the internet, Amazon.com I think, and the rebuild kit from Southwest Marine in Grapevine. The guys there were very helpful to show me what the OMC lubes and gasket sealant and glue looked like so I would use the correct stuff. They are not the ones that previously did the impeller

If you decide to do it and need some help, email me.

Thanks guys. I got it done. The hardest and most frustrating part was finding all the bolts to take out. On this particular motor there are 6 bolts to remove and then disconnect the rod that is attached just below the carb's.
