How do you determine if you are getting screwed on a boat price? Are there some places you can look on the net to find out? Help!

NADA is about the only place on the net I've found. Besure and read their disclaimer and remember that what they publish is average. A very clean and well maintained boat may bring more and one that's been neglected should bring less.

NADA is a good source. But if your like me i never trust those prices. Check the internet for prices on simliar boats to see if your getting a deal or not.
Good Luck.

If you use NADA, just price the boat and motor by itself. Don't go clicking on all the accessories and options. I feel it gives you a better idea of whether you may be getting a value or not. Used boats are a dime a dozen right now so spend some time and check around. And $1.50 for a BoatTrader at the local QuikTrip might not be a bad investment.

If you can get a dealer to look up your rig in his "Black Book" it will give you a better idea of what wholesale is... and if you are trying to trade you can always figure on the dealer knocking that number down too. I don't know how to get a Black book without a dealers license. Ron

I'm looking at a 1987 boat that looks to be in good condition. The NADA website says $2000 for the boat, motor and trailer together. How much over that do you think is fair for a boat in really good condition? How about a boat that's in pretty good condition?
25% above average retail for a really good boat? More?
I'm just trying to get an idea of the price range for a 16 year old boat. I have not found much to compare it to in BoatTrader but I will keep looking.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

newman if you give me a call maybe i can help you out. i promise i wont try and sell you anything. the nada book can be a joke in finding what a boat is really worth(boat if its clean is worth mid book and if not its low book, nothing and nobody pays high book for anything) and when you go to some of the private owners adds. 90 percent of the time they are laughable at what they want. as far as the 1987 model, book value does not apply, at that point its like an old truck. if its not totally outdated and everything works its worth from 2-3 k on a small fishing boat. 817-465-9595 doug
