how much play left to right before motor starts to turn is 2" to much? its on a 250hpdi

there should be virtually no play. I bet you have air in the system due to a leak.

take it to a dealer that has the sea star power purge an have them hook it up to be sure all the air is out of the system good luck.

Make shure you do`nt have any end play on the hydraulic ram rod mounts. Their is a adjusment nut w/ allen head bolt lock on the starboard side.

are you talking about thr little coller thingy with allen screw? and should i be able to move motor with my hands 1/2" to 3/4" ?

Yes on the coller and no on the movment. The center connection bolt may need attention. Have seen them wear and alow movement but slack is most likly in the collar adjustment.

Zuma, Check all of the mechanical attachments for play as recommended. If everything is tight do the following: With all air bled from the system and the motor pointed straight, while looking at the steering wheel, push on the motor to one side. If the motor moves and the wheel trys to turn, you most likely have a helm valve problem. Watch the wheel closely. It will only turn slightly if at all. If the motor moves and the wheel does not move, there is an issue inside the cylinder. Either way I can get you back on the water. Give me a call. Butch 210-317-7035 www.boatsteeringrebuilders.com

I moved motor last night didnt see wheel moving buti could move motor i think about 1/2" 3/4" with my hand I had play at coller when I move wheel at helm its like wheel is connected to nothing the first 1 1/2" 2" then you can fill some kind of tension and motor will start moving thank to all that have responded so far james painter
