Well I have got problems.Seems the number six piston on my mercury decided to eat itself.I need to know if its a good idea to have that cylinder sleeved or if i need to just start over with a new motor. The head of course is trashed also.Does anyone have suggestions on a used motor as money is a big consideration with my wife and three kids. They seem to still enjoy eating and what not.Dont really know where to start looking for a good mechanic.I guess I just need some direction. It is a 1998 200hp mercury on a 20ft nitro Any help is appreciated

I would have it looked at by a certified mechanic........probably several hours of labor.
Usually around $3000 to have them rebuilt....but you wind up with an almost new motor if the mechanic does a complete rebuild to include carbs, fuel pump, thermostats, water pump, and a complete regular tuneup.

If you get it rebuilt dont forget to do a regular new motor breakin with double oil for first 10-15 hours. Then take it back to the mechanic for a check and retorque the heads.

Thank you boatman1,but what I am wondering is if it smart to sleeve the motor.Does anyone have any pros or cons.I know it is alot of money either way and don't want to spend money where I shouldn't.I had a mechanic look at it like you said and sleeving it would be cheaper but I don't know if it is the right way to go.Has anybody had one sleeved with luck or bad luck please let me know.

If you decide to get a new motor give me a shot. I may be interested in buying your blown one. My lower unit went out. Thanx

JasonD, when it comes down to it, in a rebuild, its on how bad the motor took the hit, just went thru a 94 Merc two bad holes, sleeved one hole, new crank shaft, bore and hone the other 4 holes, two new push rods, carb re-build, went thru the gear case new seal kit and water pump, its back in the water today we turned keyed it for just over 6 thousand with a 6 month warranty, a power plant in the 200 hp range is over 15 thousand at 2007 prices, we rebuilt that one at 1/3 of new, if we can help give us a buzz 979 323-9087 / Howard www.fiberworksboats.com

Jason a lot of the 2 stroke motorcycles come sleeved from the factory. I don't see where a boat motor would be much different.
I fish on the edge and stay out of the middle
