Are there any tricks or special bearings, etc that I can do with my reels to make them more saltwater resistant? I rinse them after every use then spray liberally with Reel Magic. If they get dunked in the saltwater after a couple of days, they don't work that great. Any suggestions?

I have 5500 and 6500 C3. They are all stainless and just require a rinse in freshwater after a day out. I would look into switching to C3 to avoid any hassle.

Yes you can trust the Government, just ask the Indians.

#1 rule NEVER rinse off a reel. Just get a dry cloth and stray Simple Green or alcohol and wipe down the reel.

If your reels need a good cleaning I can take care of you.

I would disemble the reel after getting dunked in saltwater, clean and oil.

You can go with full ceramics (not hybrids) stainless rust resistant ball bearings in hybrid ceramics are generally what spalls from salt corrosion, internally the stainless parts are pretty rust resistant, but you WILL get galvanic destruction of any spot where dis-similar metals (ie anodized aluminum side plates/stainless, spools, screws, come in contact- you will notice green colored areas and this is the start of galvanic corrosion,

Full ceramics on a C3 or C4 will run over $100 --

BUT when installed you can DUNK the reels in a can of corrosion X- without teardown, and keep on fishin for a week in the surf,

That said I wouldn't try this with the Daiwas or Shimano's, far more moving parts and stuff to go bad.

Curious...but why is that? Been taking a shower with my rods and reels since I was a kid. ( yeah, I'm kinky like that). Never any problems.

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

I'm curious too. I dropped all my offshore gear in the swimming pool for many years, including Abu's, Shimano TLD's and Penn's and never had one spot of corrosion or had a reel freeze up. In fact, the TLD's went years between teardowns.

I have found that the ABU's are reasonably saltwater resistant but any reel that has been dunked in saltwater needs to be torn down that day without fail or it will seize. I learned that important lesson with a Mitchel 300 back in 1974

As far as making them more saltwater resistant, use a thin layer of marine grease on the inside of the end covers, and on the spool ends or spray with Corrosion X, grease any bearing that isn't a spool bearing, Keep the level wind oiled and wipe the outside with corrosionX. You will find a lot of info here:

Funny, I've never seen a stainless C3 and I have quite a few of them. The outsides are plastic, chrome plated brass and aluminum. The pinion gear spool shaft and the bearings are stainless. I will agree that the C3 is a better casting reel.

IMHO

1) Never dunk your reel in saltwater.

2) If you do it, strip, wash and re-lube.

After every normal use I just light rinse all my reels with fresh water. I don't pressure spray. Just a low pressure rinse. Shake dry and wipe off. Then a light spray of WD-40 and wipe off again. I have several classic Ambassadeur reels over 10 yrs old that are still going strong with little or no corrosion.
