I just loaded new line on my spinning reel...the first time I ever have.
Now when I cast....after the lure hits the water and before the bail closes on the retrieve, several more loops come off the reel and some wrpa around the reel foot....
I checked for line twist when I was filling the spool by seeing if it formed loops after about 15-20 cranks worth of line.
What gives? Too much line?

My guess is too much line. How much of the spool is showing above the line? James ------------------ If we aren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat? A closed mouth gathers no feet.

Probably too much line or too heavy. What type and # test are you trying to use? On what reel?

Pup: Couple of things, 1. After spooling up I hook a swivel to a post and one to end of line. Then walk backwards for as many feet as you can with the bail open hold slight tension with thumb and fore finger. Then close bail and reel in with drag set HIGH. This will go along way to getting the twist out of that part of the line you will be casting. 2. You said 'The bail closes', you should be closing the bail, not rotating handle to make it close. 3. Also, as stated, if you have way too much it will flip off. I like to have a 1/4 inch to lip. That sounds like alot but I have NEVER used all the line on a spool before replacing.

I was haviving the same problems. I was putting 12 XL line on. Some one said to soak the line for 30 minutes in warm water and the have the line label up. Did it and its great now. Also after I had the line on the reel I opened the bail and walked off quite a bit of it and then reeled it back in. Now I am happy with it. Keeper.

maybe you are using low mem line with small spool diameter? i put 8lb spider mono on a 1/2-3/4 inch spool on a spinning and had to wait 3 weeks before some memory kept all problems out... also when you spoolup try keeping enough pressure on the line, because when they say leave the spool on the ground and reel in through the guides i believe it doesnt apply enough tension for the line to get memory.
