Hello Everyone,
I am headed to Galveston tomorrow to do some surf fishing and wanted to know how my two wheel drive ranger will handle it? Not looking to do anything crazy just post up on the beach and fish.
Also anyone know if the bull reds are making their way in yet? I am looking to cast net mullet for bait.
Will post a report at the end of the weekend.
Travis

Fished San Luis Pass on the Galveston and limited out on smacks after about an hour and a half. Some guys drove up and caught a couple flounder and left all within 20 minutes. Water is looking great.

@Shane - What did you catch them on? We were down from Dallas and spent the week at Pointe West (Sun-Thur) and fished Tue & Wed at the pass. I'm a know-nothing freshwater guy, so I just used shrimp and a heavy weight. I caught one speckled trout (first fish on Tuesday at dusk) and the rest were croakers - about 30 of 'em. Couldn't get anything else hooked up, but was hoping for flounder.
Maybe I wasn't deep enough?
The water did look great, but I think it was a little clear for my dead-shrimp strategy. Switched to a 1/2 oz artificial shrimp for a little bit, but didn't get bit. I aborted pretty quick and went back to the shrimp.
We're usually down a couple of weeks a year, but I'm the only one in our group who cares about fishing. Weather was perfect this week, and - for now - catching a mess of croaker beats catching nothing at all.

Generally when u use dead shrimp don`t do very good hard heads, piggies, mostly junk fish, good fish caught needs to be on live shrimp, live mullet, piggies, crabs and cut up skipjack, mullet on a bottom rig for redfish or throw ur arm off using artificials..Bill

I used live shrimp and a popping cork with a wire leader. After the shrimp ran out I caught some on a silver spoon and plumtreuse sand eels.

Water looked great, but bait was not in the surf yet. Gonna check it out in a couple of weeks and see if it gets better. We caught 2 cats that was it.

You CAN catch "Good Fish" on dead shrimp; Fresh dead is better. Even though I dont shrimp use much anymore.....Redfish LOVE fresh-dead shrimp though.I'll take a Dead shrimp over an alive any day for Reds.........Gold spoons are cheaper. Fishing on the beach?(Not saying you wont catch something) Those fish are moving towards the bays and estuaries,Bayous,etc...Because thats where the Bait is heading too.Just like freshwater.
