Not for sure but I imagine the 788 is going to have better power. Go to Humminbird website and compare they have a comparison on there you pick the units and compare them side by side.

The 788 can share data with another unit via ethernet or Interlink, the 597 cannot. The 788 has two SD card slots, the 597 has one. The 788 has Contour XD base map, the 597 has Uni-map base map.
They have the same display and same power.

788 also has 3 Favorite Presets, 597 you have to use VIEW to page forward and EXIT to page back. 788 can do both plus you can set 3 Favorites with one button click to a Foavorite VIEW

thanks Doug, looking at something for the front deck, and I kinda like the idea of being able to network them, but its not a requirement.

going with the 898c SI Combo on the console Are you buying a new boat? If so getting factory installed your electronics can fall under the boat warranty. I know Skeeter when you rig Humminbird you get 3 Year Warranty with Factory Rigged Electronics. Might be something to think about.

Thanks for the info Doug, didn't realize that. Yes, the boat will be ordered with the electronics onboard and installed. I need to verify if the factory is going to do that, or the dealer
