I don't normally post on this board (fly) but I have recently gotten back into fly fishing pretty serious for bass. After months of catching them on a regular rod and tackle I decided to make it a little more sporting with the fly rod and man has it been awesome. Granted I am fishing the private East Texas waters of the ranch I work on but it is still unreal when a 6-7 lb bass takes a deer hair frog! I don't usually catch quite as many but a good day is 20 or more in the 3-5 lb average range. I have been experimenting with different flys but the poppers and frog patterns seem to work the best. I've only managed a few on clouser-style streamers. Any other suggestions of patterns to try??

Dave

Well, there's just not much better than that topwater action. So if you get bored of the deer hair frogs, try some grasshopper patterns. I'd suggest foam because it floats better.

Man, I miss private East Texas ponds!

From what you've told us, I think I'd just keep on doing what your doing. Doug

I'm with Doug insofar as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But if you want to try some other patterns I suggest getting some Gartside Gurglers, some Muddler Minnows and other topwaters to see if they have a strong preference. Also, you can try a sinking line with a short leader, 18" or so of mono tied to the end of the line, with a floating fly. This will put it on down and it will ride above the bottom. Just a thought.

P.S. did I mention how jealous we all are of you, getting to fish that private water?

Dave if you are just wanting to try something else I have had lots of luck with a fly I got from Orvis. "Tequelly Streamer"
I use a size 8
