If you do I'm interested to know your MPG while in tow? What motor do you have in your tundra? What boat do you tow?
Thanks

I used too. Got about 10 mpg. with the V8. I didnt like how the truck pulled. Spmetimes it would seem like the boat would push or pull the truck.
Got rid of the truck and went to a Ford Super Duty. MPG is not much better, but the truck pulls the boat ALOT better.

I don't own one, but towed my ZX225 with one and got ~12 on the highway. It pulled the hell out of it though. Night and day difference when pulling with the Tundra and 5.7L than my weak [censored] Chevy and 5.3L

I have the big V8 5.7 and get about 12.5 to 13. If i drive it hard i get around 12. Pulling a Skeeter ZX202. I love it.

My 07 Tundra 5.7 pulls my 21ft ProCraft like its not even there. I added an exhaust and rear swaybar if that matters, but that was before even buying my boat! Oh and I get from 10 to 12 mpg when towing depending on how close I am to the ramp at daybreak!!

My 08 5.7 tundra gets roughly 10.5 towing. Unless ur getting paid to drive it. I would look else where IMO. Tows alright but even unloaded I don't get no better then 14.5 empty. I spend more on gas then I did with my diesel

I went into a Tundra out of a 2500 HD Chevy. So, that was the difference. I guess I like the way 3/4 tons pull boats. I liked the room in the Tundra, but just hated how it drove. But there were times in that truck I would wonder who was pulling who, the boat or the truck.

my stepdad pulls his 21i and gets ~11MPG. Ouch! I have the same boat and that is not what I was hoping to hear. I have a 04 V8 4Runner 4.7L and get the same or better depending on how I drive it. Just don't think it has the drive train a 3/4 ton truck does... Maybe I will just keep my SUV and run the wheels off it! I have 123,000 mile on it right now and it runs like a champ still. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me "you tow that boat with that SUV?"

got a 2010 Tundra with the 5.7L V8 in March. Wont have any other brand of truck again. Toyota's for LIFE! Get about 12 MPG pulling a 20.5 ft VIP Fish/Ski. Unmatched pulling power among gasoline engines (I've driven them all). Only thing better would be getting a Ford Powerstroke, but for the price difference Tundra all the way!
FYI, for regular non-towing hwy mileage, I get 17-19 with premium unleaded

How can you tell if a truck is 3/4 tons? I'm looking at Toyota's site and don't know. Sorry never owned a truck before....well unless you count a Ford Ranger many years ago!

Dont make claims that you cant back up with that "would outpull a tundra anyday" stuff. Can you be more specific as to what the test would be? Too many variables to make that kind of claim!

You should have got a 2007 half ton dodge quad cab with a 5.7 hemi i pull a 3800 lb 21 foot nitro bass boat at 65mph and get 17 mile per gallon unless i stick my foot in it. And you can pull my bass boat at 80 mph and can not even tell it is there!!!! It is because it kicks back to four cylinders when you get up to cruising speed but the power is there when you want it. If iam not pulling any thing at 80 mph iam still getting 19 to 20 mpg. If you drop to 55 mph you can get 25 mpg but if you put your foot into it gas mileage drops real fast!!!

I have the 1st gen Tundra, a 2001. Don't have boat, but pull a 25' enclosed trailer with car inside no problems. That is pushing its 8.5k limit. However, they do eat the gas!

Can you be more specific as to what the test would be? Too many variables to make that kind of claim! [/quote] pulled a tractor 5500 lbs for my uncle with his tundra 5.7 4x4 one day pulled good for a half ton and especially good for a gas truck. But that 496 I had was a freekin beast. and yes it would outpull a tundra anyway u want to put it. bigger truck bigger motor better tranny(allison).not tryin to hurt your feelings just stating i have pulled with both and the chevy was just way stronger. and the fuel mileadge sucked once burned a half tank in 50 miles.

Chad man I will give you the run down how I feel. I think all 1/2 ton trucks with comparable sized motors are gonna be close to the same and have their pros and cons. The market has to be level in some fashion or the lesser simply couldn't keep up. Everyone has their brand preference and they will stand by it.
That being said a 1/2 ton truck will be a huge step up in whatever brand you like best. The upgrade for you will be a heavier payload rating, increased brake size and power, more weight which will give more control stopping your boat. Larger motor and better transmission also. Pick the truck that is most comfortable to you and fits the styling you like best because in the end it's YOUR truck and you are gonna make the payments.
I will say that yes 3/4 and 1 ton trucks will out tow 1/2 tons obviously due to all the same reasons a 1/2 ton will outpull your 4runner. Every truck gas or diesel is gonna drop with any load period. Added weight takes added power which is created by added fuel. I would say majority of 1/2 tons will range anywhere from 9-13mpg depending on how you drive. The payoff in a truck to your SUV isn't in mpg it's in safety of a larger vehicle with larger parts and added control of your boat in all situations. Even my Dodge with a cummins drops down to 13-14 pulling my boat.
If you want a truck go for it. With the competitiveness of todays market they are all comparable and it's just MOSTLY personally preference with each one having their weaknesses. If you would like to see how a 3/4 ton handles a boat then you are welcome to hook on to your boat with my truck and take us to Fork!!
Good luck with your decision man and if you have any questions give me a shout

A buddy pulled my 21' Legend with his tundra before and the Gas mileage was horrible. We got 10.5 miles per gallon. Never take his again.
I have a 3/4 GMC with a duramax diesel and would highly recomend a diesel if you pull a bunch. The 3/4 ton suspension and extra torque and HP of a Diesel are well worth it in my opinion. I get 16 MPGs pulling my boat and 17 empty. No matter what I do I can't really change the MPGs that much. I have this truck loaded with a 31' travel trailor and still got 15mpgs.
I plan to add a new exhuast and intake. I have read you can get over 20. Hopefull they are right.

07 Tundra 5.7 Liter TRD with tow package. 10.5 per gallon with a Ranger Z21. I like the truck, but wish I had gotten 4WD for slick steep ramps or wish I could of gotten it with a locking rear diff.

geez... not much love for the MADE IN TEXAS tundra. except for mine, MADE IN INDIANA!!! I have an 08 Tundra 4x4 with the 5.7L and 6speed tranny.
i drove my boat and truck (since I was moving) back from Oregon to Indiana. Then I moved with truck & boat (this time loaded to the gills) from Indiana down to Texas. My best milage was going through the hills in California were I got 18mpg in tow mode. Now keep in mind that I wasn't trying to sustain 70mph going uphill for the sole purpose of trying to get better milage. The overall average (Oregon to Indiana) going ~65mph the whole way back was 16.3mpg TOWING. When coming down from Indiana I had considerably more weight in the truck and boat and got right at about 15mpg. I also didn't have the hills to help out either. Once again, I'm pretty easy on the pedal when gas is almost $4 per gallon. Of course, when you do hammer down you can blow the doors off people on the highway, even if you are towing. Love that 6 speed tranny. The absolute worst I've gotten while towing was right at 14mpg going through some windy roads in oregon. Without towing, I get right around 18-19 for a highway average. In town it sucks, but who's truck doesn't. My Dad has the 2011 Tundra with the 4.6 V8 and 2wd and gets 22+ mpg. His truck also still has 310hp, not too shabby for a small block. The only reason why I got a Tundra was because of the consumer reports ratings. Every vehicle I've had has been right on the mark with any issues that CR listed. Of course, I still only have 55k on my tundra. Easy to brag about a vehicle until it has 150k. i do love my hydraulic assist tailgate. Not real sure of its significant purpose, but its just fun to play with.

I have a 2010 Tundra 4x4 with the 5.7 engine. Pulling my 17'1" Champion I get 14-15mpg and without towing I can get up to 18.5 on the highway.

I have the new Ford ecoboost and hauled my tr-21x to Amistad and averaged 16.5, it is a 4x4 king ranch and empty it will average 20 all day long. I was a little worried when I first got it, was only averaging 17. But once I got around 8k miles the mileage really picked up. I bought this truck for my wife when I bought the new 6.7 ford deisel. It averages 19 on the hwy, and around 16 pulling my boat.

07 Tundra 5.7 Liter TRD with tow package. 10.5 per gallon with a Ranger Z21. I like the truck, but wish I had gotten 4WD for slick steep ramps or wish I could of gotten it with a locking rear diff. I also have an '07 Tundra TRD, and the tow pkg. I am quite happy with the limited slip rear diff. I have only slipped on one ramp, and that was last October on Ivie after a tournament, WET ramp, and it didn't slip bad at all. Unlike the goats, fords, and chevys that were burning their tires off trying to get up the ramp. actually, I thought that my truck has a locking diff, but what do I know? And re Westtexbass82, some Tundras (mine included) have a GVWR of 10,000#'s, which, I'm fairly certain qualifies the Tundra as a 3/4 ton, not a 1/2 ton. To the OP, I get around 16.5-17 on the highway unloaded, and around 13-14 pulling my boat (17.5'), and when I but a big boy boat like a zx250 behind it, I get around 12-13 depending on how heavy my foot is, terrain, etc. Overall, I love the truck. It can easily do anything I ask it to, it looks good, rides well, and the handling is pretty impressive for a truck. If I had been looking for great gas mileage when I was shopping for a ride, I would have bought a Prius, but I was looking for a truck that could pull boats and trailers with ease, and that would have the available power that I needed, so I bought the Tundra. I have owned (or had as a company vehicle) almost every truck you can think of (excluding f-150), and I would take the Tundra over any gas engine powered truck out there. diesel, well, that is another animal entirely. I would take a diesel from any brand over the Tundra, but the price was/is right on used Tundras, nto so much on used deisels.

On another note like tritonman said look at that new ford Eco motor. I just bought one and so far I have gotten 20 or better on the highway. Haven't been a great distance with the boat yet but will pull as fast as you want to go. Friends of mine say they are getting 15-17 pulling their boats with it.

The new Ford Ecoboost is the best of both worlds with fuel economy and power. The new Ford Ecoboost engine is a twin turbo V6 that has 365 HP and 420 lbs of torque which is what matters when towing, not bad for a V6. Equiped with the max tow pkg it can tow 11,300 LBS. The Toyota 5.7L V8 has 381HP and 401 lbs of torque and from what I can tell will tow 10,400 LBS properly equiped. Ford has come a long way with the technology in there trucks and there new V6 proves it. Im not going to bash Toyota but I will give you all the info that is available to me on any truck Ford or Toyota that you may have questions about. There are so many different combinations of drivetrains and good trucks on the market it would take all day to list. By the way I am the General Manager of a Ford store and an avid bass angler. I would be glad to help anyone in any way I can just give me a call. My name is David and my direct line is (210) 921-6825

I've definately heard more people say that tundra is a gas drinker when towing. Most people seem to really like them until a trailer is hooked behind it. It has plenty of pulling power, but from what i've heard the mpg is nearly cut in half with a trailer behind it.

Well put. I am biased being a ford salesman, but the only truck that I would really say avoid if you want to pull is the 5.3 Silverado. Just has no muscle compared to the tundra, f150, or ram IMO I understand this holds no weight at all on a forum where you better have a 20+ foot boat to speak a word, but I can hardly feel my 17' Triton behind my '04 1500 Silverado with the 5.3L. Also, I have pulled it in a Tundra and F-150 and I think they're all pretty comparable. All that being said, my dad had a real hard time towing a lightweight trailer behind his 2006 Chevy with the 5.3L and I had another buddy who had all kinds of trouble with his 07 with the 5.3L, so I think the newer 5.3L's are not as good as the old ones. At least that's been my experience.

Guys keep in mind when buying a truck one of the most important things to consider is the ratio of the rear axle. The ratio is what is going to play a Big part in what kind of milege you get out of your truck. Just remember when selecting a truck that the rear end is just like the prop on your boat. You need to select one that gives you what you are looking for. It's alot like a prop if your boat is strong out of the hole you probably had to sacrafice some top end, the same is true about a rear end. If you choose a rear end that is best for towing it will have great pulling ability but you will give up some gas mileage.

I'm not a dodge fan but I now own a hemi and that flat out pulls. I hate pulling with my wife's tahoe and 5.3

the normal ford v6 cost about $6,000 less and pulling a z8 it is getting 14.5 at 64 mph to tyler from north west of fort worth but the braking power just dosent feel like enough until the trailer brakes kick in.

I was a little worried when I first got it, was only averaging 17. But once I got around 8k miles the mileage really picked up. I bought this truck for my wife when I bought the new 6.7 ford deisel. It averages 19 on the hwy, and around 16 pulling my boat. Is the Ecoboost just a v6 engine? Trying to understand the Ecoboost part. It's a gasoline turbo V6 Chad. It has 420 lb ft of torque. Pretty impressive. I had a new 2008 Sequoia with the 5.7 last year. I liked the way it drove and pulled the boat. It was more than adequate for towing a 21' bass rig on a tandem trailer. It got about 11-12 mpg towing. More importantly it averaged 13.8 mpg over the 80K miles I put on it in two years. That is in town, highway, and some towing average over 80K miles. My 2010 Chevy Sub gets about the same pulling a boat as the Sequoia but it is not nearly as strong. The 5.3 Chevy has 350 lb ft of torque compared to the Toy's 400 lb ft. Both have a Six speed auto tranny. Drag race the Toy will run off and hide from the Chevy, no contest. No bash here just fact. The good thing about the Suburban is that over 56K miles I have on it now it has averaged 16.1 mpg. That is real world everyday driving same as the miles I put on the Toy. Here's the math... 40,000 miles a year at 16.1 mpg = 2,484 gallons 40,000 miles a year at 13.8 mpg = 2,898 gallons Difference of 414 gallons @ $4.00 a gal = $1,656 more dollars a year used or $138.00 per month more fuel burned. Now the question is, Is it worth it?

2009 Silverado 4spd auto with OD 4x2 20 inch factory wheels with goodyear street tires 5.3 Towing package with 4.10 gears. I would be able to tow like it wasn't even there. I would go from dallas to San Antonio and still have close to a 1/8th tank left on a 26 gallon tank. Stopping seemed to be a little hard at times due to drum brakes out back, but it never really was an issue. I traded the truck in due to not having the room in the back i wanted for my daughter. I purchased a 2011 Tundra Crew Max for the room and for the fact that I just thought it looked Great and had enough room for 3 adults in the back. with the following 5.7 4x4 6spd auto with OD 4.30 gears 3 inch leveling kit Mud terrain tires. I do 70mph I'm getting about 10mpg and as low as 8mph. If I do about 55 i'm looking at 13mpg. I know the 4x4 lift and the tires aren't a fair comparison, but I'll be honest it doesn't seem to tow as well as my old silverado as far as mileage and how the motor seems to labors at times between gears at cruising speeds. Stopping is like the boat isn't even there. The breaks are huge and could stop 5 boats back there. I have heard of people getting all kinds of great mileage in a tundra. My old roomate has a 2011 5.7 4x2 stock rims/tires and on the highway he gets 16.8-17.2 and his 2009 one was much of the same. Overall I knew what i was getting. I figured 17mpg on the sticker would net me about 15 with the lift and the mud tires and I was right. About 15.5 on the HWY. But what I didn't expect was to go down about 6-8mph by towing on flat roadways. I'm curious to know if a 33X12.50R20 Toyo Open Country M/T makes that much of a difference over a stock tire though.. Either way I hope this helps. I wonder what a dealer would say if you showed up with a boat and asked to do a test drive/tow with the boat first

I hate pulling with my wife's tahoe and 5.3 I had a 2002 Ram 1500 regular cab with the V6 and that thing could barely pull itself around. With 70k miles, the whole truck was falling apart and it was by far the worst vehicle I've ever owned. I had a 2000 Silverado with the 4.3L V6 that got about 19 on the highway and 15 towing that 17' Triton, and that Dodge with the 3.7L V6 got 14 highway and 10 towing and it was running at 3k RPM just going constant 65 mph on the highway with less than 2k. Just a ridiculous excuse for a truck. The hemi might be good, but I'll never own another Dodge again. Sometimes you just can't erase that memory, you know?

i hope ford doesn't shoot themselves in the foot with this eco-boost. i would love to see there turbo v6 change the market. Of course, the first of anything new will have bugs. there isn't a single vehicle that I would buy the 1st year of a new model change. I had an 99 f-150 before my tundra. btw, f150 was rated truck of the year in 99. it did have the 4.6l v8, which was really weak and wasn't worth the 1mpg difference to the standard block. i am not going to compare the power of a 4.6 f150 to a 5.7 tundra (unlike those that seem proud of their 8.1 chevys at 10mpg) my f150 was just a pain to work on in comparison to any other truck thus far, and yes you have to certainly work on them. the f150 didn't handle the boat very well either. i didn't notice this until i got my tundra. my ford was really kinda scary at times trying to stop my boat too. don't even notice it in the tundra. of course the tundra is a heavy truck in comparison to the 99 f150. the new fords appear to be heavier.
sparkplugs took way way too much work to replace!.. try getting those back ones and you'll know what i mean.
list of problems i had with my f150 by 150k: heater core (11hrs of labor and had to remove stearing column...hanes book said TAKE TO DEALER!) raidator (and yes, i did routine coolant changes) alternator both front hub assemblies ($$$ thanks to abs) both from brake calipers failed: ceramic cylinders JUNK! both rear diff seals and wheel bearings both front half shafts egr tube all ball joints tye rods and pitman arm (ill just consider this maintenance for fords sake) rear sliding window leaked, everyone i asked that had one had same problem. universals joints twice (not major, but my biggest complaint was the lifetime sealed bearings that didn't have a grease fitting... and didn't last a lifetime for sure! avoidable problem)
my poor hanes book was barely together after having that vehicle for only 5 years.
now to end this on a positive note: the truck never left me stranded and gave me plenty of heads up when something was about to go out. engine- no problems tranny- no problems differential (excluding wheel bearings and axle seals) ooo. the speakers were better than my tundra. sharp looking truck to the end too. all these were listed positive for my truck (aside from the looks) in CR, which was why I bought it in the first place.

I have an 07 Sequoia and I believe it is on the same exact undercairage of the tundra and have no problems towing. I usually get 12 to 14 mpg while towing . Usually cant even tell that there is a boat behind. I dont usually gun it when taking off from a stop and think this helps the mpg a lot. Good luck!
I would be drinking but I have a Fishing problem.

the 8.1 i had got 10 mpg on a good day ( i was 19 when i owned it and made way to much money for my age). only had it for 5 months then got a diesel. i was merely commenting on a guy that said the tundra was the strongest gas burner and he had driven them all. that truck had ranch hands front and back and i put a 2" lift and 33" mud tires on it. it was really cool to be able to punch it at 30mph and smoke the tires. oh yeah igt wasnt stock either i put a new mas air folw sensor intake and exhaust plus had it programmed. probably cost me 10 grand to drive it for 5 months. once again i was 19. will never think of owning one again but glad i did.

I just bough the new F-150 eco boost and I had a Toyota before with the 5.7 litre. Toyota 17 mpg empty at 70mph and 9 mpg at 70 mph towing a boat. Eco boost 19 mpg at 70 mph empty on cruise and towing a boat at 70 mph I get 13 mpg. They both pull great but I like the Ford because I can pull with the cruise on. The truck pulls like a diesel. It will carry over hills at 70 mph and never down shift. Its a good truck.

I talked to a gentleman at the gas station the other day that had put a Cold Air Intake and Air Filter; along with a masterflow muffler and it increased his milage 3 miles per gal. I am ready to do that to mine if there is anyone on the forum that can do the work.

Toyota is gettin 10mpg towing. Two real close friends of mine have them and that's what they are getting. Neither one are buyin another one...
On another note like tritonman said look at that new ford Eco motor. I just bought one and so far I have gotten 20 or better on the highway. Haven't been a great distance with the boat yet but will pull as fast as you want to go. Friends of mine say they are getting 15-17 pulling their boats with it. I'm right there with you.. 8-10 if i do the speed limit, but i do have a lift and 33s my truck is stock aside from i have AT tires. of course, any truck you lift and up the tires on is gonna hurt you... especially towing. I really wish I knew how much it was actually hurting my mileage though. The sticker only said 17mpg with my truck to begin with. I have had as high as 15.9 on a trip to Dallas. What do you get to a full tank of gas Miles wise?

I talked to a gentleman at the gas station the other day that had put a Cold Air Intake and Air Filter; along with a masterflow muffler and it increased his milage 3 miles per gal. I am ready to do that to mine if there is anyone on the forum that can do the work. its all extremely easy bolt on work usually just simple hand tools. if you can read directions you should be ok. also most custom shops will install pretty cheap to. looking about $800 TO $ 900 in parts though

What do you get to a full tank of gas Miles wise? I normally fill up at 1/8th tank and run millage every fill up. So I don't know what the mpg is for running on only full tank. If its highway, no towing, I get 17.5-19 on avg. 17.5 in the winter in Oregon because they put some [censored] additive in their fuel as a winter mix. I've had up to 19.5, but this was rare. 18.5 is pretty common for highway. If I'm doing a lot of in town driving, right around 15. Overall towing, 14-16.5 depending on the road going 65. I hit 18-19 several times towing going through some hilly terrain (as long as it was highway). Its amazing how much better your mpg can get if you feather the throttle going uphill. The boat weight can really work to your advantage with this. I have also not been in Texas long enough to run milage yet. Additives can really kill some performance, so not sure if there is any here. I'll fill up tomorrow and see how the numbers look after going to fork and back.

2011 4WD 5.7 crew cab Tundra pulling an 18.5 ft. Stratos and I get about 12-13 mpg if I drive like I have some sense. I get about 16-17 mpg unloaded.
The Tundra has tons of room and pulls my boat great. I was hoping for better mpg but don't regret buying the truck.

Towed with dads to Amistad once about 600 miles round trip, 13mpg average. 5.7L. I would have bought one but Toyota wanted 7k more to trade so I bought a 5.7L dodge, yes a dodge I know, and it's been the best truck I've ever owned. 2 fords 3 Chevys. Tows as good as the tundra. 19-20mpg hwy, 12-14mpg towing.

How many of you guys getting 13-14 MPG towing do your MPG figures by hand and not using the truck display? I know a lot of guys trust that display too much, and that is why the MPG is varying so much. Realistically I think you can expect about 10 MPG towing a 20+ boat with the Tundra 5.7.

Good info. I was looking at this Ford yesterday. I'm not to thrilled about buying a first year model production vehicle so I will wait. My 4Runner is almost paid for so I think I'm just going to stick it out and see what it feels like to not have a car payment!! Besides, never thought I would own a Ford being a vette guy up to this point! Tough pill to swallow!

I've had an 01 and an 07 chevy and 5.3 and I didn't realize how crappy they pulled until I pulled with a dodge and hemi. Then towed with the 5.7 tundra. I'm not a dodge fan but I now own a hemi and that flat out pulls. Trust me, I'm not a Dodge guy at all. I've owned 3 Chevy's and currently an 08 Chevy Tahoe (my wifes), but this Dodge and Hemi combo is a freaking pulling machine. Seriously, I haven't had any problems and this truck moves. I know the other Dodge motors are horrible, but the Hemi is a whole new beast. I get 12- 12.7mpg pulling my ZX225 at 70. Usually I'm towing at 75-80 and which I normally see around 10mpg. I've a 3rd vehicle to drive as my daily driver and leave my Dodge hooked up to the boat. I probably wont sale it until I found another gasoline engine that runs like this one. I do regret getting rid of my '04 Chevy Duramax 3/4 4x4 for getting into this Dodge.

I know a lot of guys trust that display too much, and that is why the MPG is varying so much. Realistically I think you can expect about 10 MPG towing a 20+ boat with the Tundra 5.7. I guess everyone should get a 19ft Norris Craft then if there is that much difference. I think my re-sale value just went up Do my numbers by hand every time. Guage is sometimes consistent, but I don't think it adapts to each tank of gas too well. I tried using it just to compare to the by hand numbers and reset it every time. Sometimes it was over and sometimes it was under. Either way, never have I seen it show under 14 on any trip. My by hand numbers are very consistent. I can get pretty close to guessing what I'm going to get based on the road now. But I still run the numbers anyway just for fun. I will say, leave your mpg on instantaneous and your lead foot goes away real fast! Seeing 5mpg or less going up a steep hill is frightening. As for the Dodges, had one when I was younger... terrible milage (gas was less expensive then) but made it to 265k before I sold it, for 500 more than I bought it for. ok, i got it for 2k to start. tranny was leaking fluid like crazy at the end, and that was its 2nd. engine was original and ran great. burnt oil at the end (265k, ill accept that) but used lucas oil additive and it sealed it right up. however, ran into a LOT of tranny problems before 100k using work vehicles and they get slammed on consumer reports pretty bad for it too. However, I love the look of the rams and am glad to hear them starting to get better mpg (they were definately lacking for awhile). They get the tranny ratings up and i'll definitely look into them in the future.

Put a transmission in the dodge I just traded at 80k. Dodge has had transmission problems for several years. The hemi pulled great but that was about the only thing I liked on it. It got about 12-13 pulling my boat. I have taken a couple trips with guys that had the toyotas and everytime I was splitting on gas and it was 10mpg. We all like whatever vehicle we have so it's normal to see the guys that have toyotas saying they get 14 or 15 pulling but that may also be like taking a pic of an 8 lb bass and callin it 10. Lol
They must be driving about 55 mph.

I have pulled a 3500# horse trailer with my 08 5.7 V8 Tundra 4X4, I got about 11 MPG and then pulled my in-laws' 23' ski boat to Arkansas and got an avg of 13-15 MPG. I love my tundra. If I was on flat surfaces, I would turn off Tow/OH and let it ride in 6th gear. But I do have an unfair advantage with a 471 Rear end

Friend has a Tundra and it gets about 11 mpg towing a 19ft Skeeter. My 04 Dodge 4x4 with Hemi gets around 12 mpg towing 21 ft Ranger. I have 192K miles on that one. (It is for sale if anyone is interested.lol) Just bought an 2011 Hemi 4x4 and it gets about 12 or maybe just a little over. Non towing mileage is a little better tho. I hear some guys claim 15 or so towing but when it comes to sharing expenses, I have never seen mileage that good tho.

My display has been pretty much spot on. Driving to choke from San Antonio If i'm in a hurry i'm getting 8-10mpg doing 70-75. If i'm taking my time and really working the throttle staying around 55-60 I'm around 13.5 Huge difference. If it wasn't lifted with the big M/T tires I could see 15-16 with the same habits. I'm also wondering about additives in the fuel here in TX. I seem to hear people in other states really talking about getting 19mpg and up.

My display on my 08 isn't close to be img right when I compare to hand calculations. Im looking at a dmax now cause I spend 600 a month on gas alone. That's more then I pay a truck note for! I've always had bad luck with gas burner trucks.

I know this is off topic, but I figured I'd share my MPG with you anyway. 2011 F-250 w/6.2L GAS engine pulling a 2009 ZX250 @ 70mph is 10mpg. If I slow down to 60-65 it will jump up to 11.5 - 12mpg. Not pulling anything I'm getting 16mpg on the highway and anywhere from 11-13mpg in town. I live 2 miles from where I work, but I go through 9 red lights or stop signs so it kills the mileage. Before I had this truck I had a 2007 Chevy Z71 that got about the same mileage pulling, but better when not towing anything. Going from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton was a huge difference when towing something. The boat doesn't push the truck around at all and stopping is extremely better now.

My kid bought a 5.7 Tundra about 2 yrs ago and wishes he had his Ford 150 back. With the Ford you never knew the 20 ft Champion was back there. With the Toyota you had to fight it all the time to keep it from down shifting. He is getting about 11mpg with the Toyota and had about 10mpg with the Ford, but the Ford was much less effort to pull with.

As far as towing goes that's like saying a 737 is faster bigger stronger than a 747. Maybe they accidentally put the Camery motor in your sons Tundra.

Lmao @ camery motor. Toyotas are tough running trucks. But From the looks of it the new ford eco boost v6 is the way to go. But ima chevy man. My 1500HD has the 6.0 and gets 12 mpg without pulling a trailer haha, Im scared to figure out what mpg it is pulling the boat. Maybe one day I can afford a new truck.

Chevy is building a Turbo V6 to compete with Fords. It will probably be next fall before you can even order one tho.
I will tell you one thing tho, the remote start on my Chevy has been pretty handy these last few weeks in the 110 degree heat!

Maybe the 5.7L on the side was just a decoration? All I know is that he's been complaining about it since he bought it. Maybe the difference was in the axle ratio.

got a 2010 Tundra with the 5.7L V8 in March.
FYI, for regular non-towing hwy mileage, I get 17-19 with premium unleaded had an 01 hd with the 8.1 stoutest gas truck i have ever had and would outpull a tundra anyday. Were you able to go anywhere w/out passing up a gas station? Seems like it would drink some gas LOL. Yes, the Chevy/GMC 8.1L Big Block V8. 496 Cubic Inches of power. It was the best gas engine made for pulling bar none. However, the only thing it couldn't pass was a gas station!! Too bad they don't make it anymore, people just couldn't afford the gas. I still think the GM and Ford 6.2L V8s are getter than the Tundra V8. The Tundra makes up for the difference with it's standard 4.30 gears with the 5.7 However, if I was buying a truck to pull the boat (and this will be my next one if they work out), is the Ford F150 Ecoboost V6. Gotta love that 420 ft-lbs at 2000 RPM!! Diesel like! And 20 + MPG empty.

I have an 03 model with the 4.7 I have pulled my boat ( bass tracker type) and gotten 18 mpg before, consitantly in the 14-16 range. used to pull fright with it and would get as low as 12 going 80mph. depends a lot on you drive it, and how it is loaded
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

I had an 07 Tundra 5.7 2wd with 18 inch wheels for three years. 17.5-19 in town driving nice very easy. 14-16 towing a 17' single axle boat under 65(some days were just really good), MPG lower with speed(sometimes lots lower). Now in a 09 Texas Edition GMC with a 5.3. 17-18 in town and 13-15 towing the same 17' champ.
The one thing about a Tundra is the ride quality improves vastly as you add weight to the back.
I am really looking forward to that new Ford with the turbo unless a diesel 1/2 ton comes out first.

i just got rid of a 04 chevy silverado with the 5.3 and got the 2011 Dodge ram with the Hemi...the chevy got worse gas mileage than what i currently get with the dodge..because of the shutting down to 4 Cyl on the highway....now addressing the transmission issues...man i hope this doesn't happen but i will relay what the dealership told me when i bought the Dodge...if it's not over 5000lbs don't use the tow button...it's not needed for something as light as a boat...i have no clue if this is accurate ...that's just what they told me....might be someone who will say different but..whatever..i don't work for Dodge and i sure don't sell them...all i know is i haven't felt the boat yet..i have to keep looking in the mirror to make sure it's still there...

Jeremy - I was told the same thing about towing. If you're pulling something that's as heavy as the truck then use the tow/haul mode. Bill Reed told me that @ Peter's when I bought the '07 Z71 I had for 3.5 years. I had no transmission issues, but they did have to replace all 8 pistons and rings in it after 28,000 miles. Seems I could only go 2,000 miles before it would be out of oil! That truck was traded in not long after that!!!

Have you looked up any vehicle coming off the line and see how many have had some type of problem at some time or another...yep that would be all of them. If a post makes up your mind about what to buy send me your address I have a guy overseas that wants to send 50 million dollars and you can get a 10% cut of it! I'll forward you the email...

Yep, I dont think there is a gasser that can out pull the 5.7 4.30 Tundra. Chevy 6.2 4.10 and Dodge 5.7 3.91 are about equal. Pulling a boat Tundra vs. my Dodge they are pretty even, if you are towing a heavier load the Tundra handles it better. I wanted the Tundra but my check book would'nt let me, 7k difference equally equipped. Ive pulled 1200g of fertilizer, that's over 10,000 lbs. with a Tundra, it was impressive vs. the other trucks I have towed our fertilizer trailers with.

Keep the 4runner till the wheels fall off. It will probably be a long time. Those things are tanks. Unless you are towing something over 20' you really shouldn't have a problem towing a bass boat with the V8 in your 4runner. You will probably not win any races, but you'll make it there safely.

The only 2 things I can find to complain about with my 2008 Tundra is i have never had a truck that dented so easily. If someone just leans against it you can bet it will leave a crease or a dent. Also have battled a Check Engine light on it since 2010. Same light issue with my wife's Avalon too. Other than that it pulls great and the interior still looks new.

Toyota keeps their cost down by using thinner gauge metal for the body panels. What engine light do you keep getting?
And I haul two kayaks by roof top on my Corolla lol. Does a pretty good job although it could benefit from bigger brakes.

After seeing all the mileage posted both towing and not towing I sure am glad I have a Dodge diesel. It pulls a 20ft Bass Cat like its not even there.

I have 2003 Tundra with the V-6. I am towing my buddies TR-21 these days with no problem. Just have to turn off the overdrive which kills the gas mileage. I am getting 12mpg.

I don't own one, but towed my ZX225 with one and got ~12 on the highway. It pulled the hell out of it though. Night and day difference when pulling with the Tundra and 5.7L than my weak [censored] Chevy and 5.3L Agree.

I have a 2010 Tundra CrewMax Cab TRD SR5 with the 5.7 liter engine. I owned a ford and chevy and my Tundra completely blows these trucks away. It's a truck. What do all of you expect when you are pulling a boat and trying to drive 70-80 MPH. Your gas mileage is not going to be good. I average around 12mpg pulling my boat and that is going 65-70 mph. I average around 18 driving 80-85 down the interstate. If I am driving the speed limit of 70-75 on the interstate my gas mileage goes up to around 20.

Sorry, but that's not even a drop in the bucket compared to the over 1 million Ford trucks being recalled due to them bursting into flames. Having said that, all brands have issues, some a lot worse than others.

The Ford will get better mileage, the Toyota will pull the ford into the ground, its that simple.

just for proof. here's the pic of my avg mpg on my way to lake fork from st. jo. I reset the avg mpg just to compare, because its not always right. This is going the speed limit with the truck in tow mode. Tow mode in the tundra isn't like a chevy or ford. Hard to explain, but I actually get a little better milage when its in (only when towing). You don't loose the top gear, and it doesn't seem to downshift out as easily to me (which is backward from other trucks i've owned). Keep in mind that I don't juice it when going uphill to maintain speed and will let it drop 5. On the flip side, not the smoothest road there. Nevertheless, 14.8mpg and the by hand numbers were right on. I also made a couple in town driving stops on the way. I've had better, but normally in hilly areas where I can use the boat weight to push. ~15mpg avg is just about right on for flat driving though when towing.

My dodge very very rarely has to down shift, except a hill like just west of Albany. All my Tow/Haul button does is run one gear lower. The tow button stops the tranny from going into overdrive.

Apples to oranges but my 02 4x4 crew cab duramax gets about 16 towing my 21'/tandem trailer at the speed limit. It's sensitive to rpm and slowing down to 60-65 (200 rpm) picks up the mpg a couple. Pretty sure I could load the tundra and boat on a flatbed behind my chevy and beat the milage everybody is quoting on the tundras towing. I expect the toyo is built well and will last a good while but don't much care for the looks of it. Reminds me of a catfish. BTW, I do own a toyota product myself as a daily driver.

What makes y'all think figuring the mpg by hand is any more accurate than letting the computer tell you what the mpg is?

I get LOUSY gas mileage. Just day to day driving, I get about 12 to 13 mpg, towing my boat, it drops to somewhere between 10 and 12 mpg. The swaybar is a GODSEND for towing, the 5.7 has enough power and torque so that I have NO problem pulling the boat. Im happy as a pig in $hit with my Tundra. Now, I wish my 250 XS was a little more fuel efficient lol...

Now, I wish my 250 XS was a little more fuel efficient lol... not as bad on the milage as I was expecting... just looking at the lift and rugged tires. how much lift did you add, or is that part of the TRD package? when i owned my f150, pathetic p255 r/t tires were stock on it... i bumped it up to p265 toyo a/t and lost 3mpg, after accounting for the conversion to a larger diameter tire. i currently have p275 bfgoodrich a/t on mine with the sr5 package (no trd). as much as i love the look of them, i'll probably switch back to the r/t just for the better milage.

Its a 3 1/2 in leveling kit with a 1 in block in the rear. The tires are 305x65x18 thus the $hitty gas mileage. Well, the Flowmaster exhaust doesnt help much either ( I love to hear it bark ) !!!

I have 2003 Tundra with the V-6. I am towing my buddies TR-21 these days with no problem. Just have to turn off the overdrive which kills the gas mileage. I am getting 12mpg. Wow... I've got a 2002 Tundra with the 3.4 too and I towed a Basscat Classic around with that for a couple of years. It did great on flat terrain but I'd have to put it in 3rd around the hills in west austin and there were times on some hills right around Lake Travis when I had a hard time going faster than 40. I don't think I'd even wanna try to tow a 21 foot boat with a dual axle trailer with my truck, but then again, the dallas region is a lot more flat than Austin is.

I have towed with all 1/2 ton brands. The tundra and F150 were the best for towing in my opinion. Gas mileage sucked in all of them but they are trucks and aren't built for gas mileage

I still love mine as well. But I'm about to have to put a new set of tires on it. I have the standard 18" wheels on the '07 TRD. I have always been a fan of the BFG A/T ko's. What size can I install on the truck without having to install a lift? What tires do y'all have on your Tundra's?

Ive got BFG 305x65x18's on mine. They fit but I had to take those little mini mud flaps off. The ones on the leading edge of the front tires. You would probably be better off going with a slightly smaller tire like a 285...but the 305 WILL fit. Ill pm you a website to checkout.
