I have a Penn 750 spinning reel with 25# line on it. Me and my brother decided to put a scale on the line to see how many pounds of drag I had set. I fished last year for kings and such so the drag was still set. To my suprise I only had about 6 to 7 pounds of drag set with the bow in the rod like a pretty good fish.....Question is what do y'all set your drag compared to the line weight/poundage??...... Thanks! Craig

Most experts recomend 1/4 line strenghth , most anglers just do the grab and pull method.
I like my drags to be on the light side and I will thumb the spool when the fish tires. I have a drag scale, I rarely use it. good luck MO

Thanks Mo! Yep I always just did the pull method (that feels about right). It just suprised me on how few of pounds that is when you put a scale to it!

i use the pull method as well. i have it set to where if it pulls drag i know for sure it's a keeper red or a solid trout. kinda hard to explain but it seriously works out that way. no drag pulling, rip it in and get the bait back in the water. drag pulls, work it in and get your stringer ready. gotta love shimano smooth drag. spinning reels are different of course. my Revo Inshore has like 24#'s of drag

Pull method. Adjust accordingly to whether I am on the reds or the trout.

30% rule: drag setting should not be more than 30% of advertised line test. IE: 25# line- 8# max drag 40# line- 13# max drag
etc, etc. doesnt need to be that close. sounds like your setting was right-on. and yes, the pull method works great, especially if you're used to pulling whatever "good" drag setting it is. I'm a puller but use a scale to verify I'm not over spec.

There are a few more things to consider when setting drag. The 30% rule is fine for open water but if you are fishing snapper, grouper, or amberjack on sticky structure you better crank that drag down all you can, also might want the drag a little on the light side when trolling.

It really just depends, I run a light drag when fishing in open water, a heavy drag if their are plenty of things to cut me off.
