We just installed a new fuel pump trying to fix the no oil light coming on and motor not staying alive. Pump is working now, but won't idle. We have to push the gas to get it to stay running. It's missing on the bottom two cylinders. We unplugged them and it would still run with no change. Wouldn't run with top two unplugged. So that led us to believe the bottom coil was bad. I tried two old coils that had come off it previously when they went bad thinking at least one might still be ok. Didn't work. There is fuel getting to them from what we could see with air breather off. Has to be spark related right? Could still be a bad coil right? We ran it around the lake this morning thinking we could get all the oil out of the carbs from when the pump went bad, but wouldn't get over 4000 rpms. Never would idle and we were running on two cylinders the whole time I'm sure. Would a new coil be first to try?

I would check the compression.

Ran brand new plugs with the same result. Top two were dark and bottom two weren't after the first run.

Well, new coils didn't work. I have no idea now.

If you were able to get 4k out of it on a 4 cylinder motor I would say no way you are only running on 2 cylinders.

Like others have said I would check compression again, then get a spark tester and check spark, coils sound expensive just to buy and try..

Well she's fixed! Turns out that the red primer lever had gotten flipped up which was constantly flooding the motor. Maybe happened when pulling the old pump out since its right above. I pushed it straight down, and she started up and ran great!!! Took it to the lake today and she was back to her old self again! Thought I should post results here in case someone else has this problem! I know I wouldn't have been able to figure it out had it not been for forums like this!
