Blackcat that sounds okay enough to do the job. I know our local walmart here has some really good prices and selections on surf rods and reels. So does Academy. I was shopping for a new reel last night since mine kind of melted the other night when that monster ran off with all my line. I prefer openface like penns and the larger ABU. Make sure the drag works good so when that big red needs to run your line doesn't snap. Which brings you to the next most important thing buy good line to put on it. Not neccessarily heavy, but good quality line. The last thing you want is to have the fight of a lifetime and POP your cheap line gives. I have seen that many times. The fishing is great right now Blackcat. I'm getting everything ready right now for tonight. Its gonna be a good one I can feel it. I noticed you were asking about floundering, I caught some really nice ones the other day they are coming up in the cuts with the tides. I caught the first one on accident. I was throwing a small finger mullet(really small) on a cork along a grass edge and BAM got one. After that I put on a speck rig and started tossing it in 30 minutes I had nine of them.
Good luck

Thanks for the advise Mdsalinas. I went called a dealer that carries the Jarvis Walker reels and he sold me. I just have not decided on the rod yet. On the fishing lines deal, I usually use Big Game 15lb to 30lb. What type of line do you perfer to fish with. Sound like things are heating up down there very nicely. Good luck tonight and let us know how you do.
Oh one more thing do you ever come across a guy by the the name poucher down there. We met him last year and boy was he helpful.

I would go with the rod that can hold a heavier line and cast a heavier bait. Often when fishing for good fish in the surf, you throw a hefty size bait, and I have seen several rods break from baits that were too heavy. These rods I saw break were not cheap rods either. Take a look at the Daiwa sea line rods. They have good action and can cast a long way
