Ive caught them on nightcrawlers.

Some folks here recommended me to use sweet corn and doughbait.

I use different gear for gar than I do for carp.

First, both need the sharpest hooks you can find, such as gamakatsu live bait hooks.

Gar: Size 1 through 4/0, depending on the size of your baits. Also helps to use a wire leader to protect against their teeth, although I've landed them fine using 20# fluorocarbon leaders as well. Best baits are live or cut sunfish, shad, and even hotdog pieces! These can be on a bait runner setup or suspended under a cork. Also, if you see them going after your corks, try some surface plugs like a tiny torpedo, rapala floater/diver, etc. Generally they won't chase a fast-moving lure, so just twitch it in.

Carp: size 10 to 4 hooks, again very sharp. Use canned sweetcorn. Take out a handful for hookbait, and throw the rest in as chum. Put one or more kernals on the hook (depending on the size of your hook) and use a bait runner setup. Make sure you are either holding onto your rod or back off of the drag so they don't pull the rod into the water! Tighten the drag one you are fighting them.
