"It is against the law to hunt alligators along the Trinity River, but McCathern had special permission from a private property owner to go on the hunt after many of the rancher's cattle were gobbled up by the behemoth reptile."

That gator's taste for BBQ might explain why he was pushing 900 pounds. That's African croc size!

BTW, poor gator? Gator is good to eat...tastes kind of like redfish! Or chicken... cool

Seriously, nothing wrong with hunting gators.

There are seasons on them here in Texas to keep them from being overharvested. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/season/animal_listing/#alligator

And it sounds like this cattle poaching gator was a serious nuisance to a certain rancher.

They can be good to eat - especially fried - and who doesn't want a gator mount in their man cave and a pair of gator skin boots?

My .02 worth.

Kind of sad ... my wife said GOOD! Different perspectives I suppose.

"Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness."

"All that we call human history--money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery--[is] the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy." C.S. Lewis

Nature gives and nature takes.

So what do we do to some old gator when it takes something from us. We Kill IT.

It should be just considered part of the cost of trying to take something natural, like the land, and using for our own purpose when some thing natural, like a big old Gator, takes a little back.

Nature is nature and it deserves some respect for when its gone so are we.

Father n law told me his dad was riding a motorcycle in Dowdy Ferry bottom area and saw a gator he estimated at or more than 12 ft. He wasn't one to exaggerate supposedly and was scared of nothing. FIL said his dad turned around and never went back. This would have been in 60's or 70's maybe.
