Ok so this question may be a little tricky to answer, being that its a different kind of fishing situation...

Over the weekend of July 4th, we will be staying with a friend who lives on 43' house boat in Seabrook. He has lived on his boat there for quite awhile, but he is not a fisherman at all. He loves takin folks out in his boat though, and he always tells us that he wants to try to take us (me and the gf) fishing, but he does not really know where to go. Usually we never fish, but just sit, relax and drink beer.

We are avid freshwater fishermen, and rarely get to fish saltwater. Since we will be on his boat all weekend (fri-mon), i may have to take him up on his offer to try to take us fishing. His boat is huge, its a 43' Albin. Anything less than 4' of water and his boat will drag bottom. And it only goes about 10 mph tops.

Ok now for the question. Do any of you guys have a suggestion on where we might be able to just anchor up somewhere and catch a few? We would be in the west side of Galveston Bay. Dont really have a target species, just anything thats willing to bite. And i figured that we would use several types of cut bait.

I was thinking about having him anchor up close to any old structure thats out in the bay. I remember seeing several on our previous trips out. And that would probably be the easiest thing to do given his boat size. Surely there would be some fish hiding at the bottom around these right? Night fishing is very likely is well.

Any other suggestions guys?

Edit: If by chance we were to target some reds or specs, are there any general locations we could try?

If you're not targeting anything specific and just looking to catch some fish, why not just fish off the boat at the location where the boat is moored? You can get some fresh dead shrimp or squid and always catch something. If you catch some piggy perch, use them live (if not too big) or cut them up for cut bait. You can always catch something on these baits, even if it's just hardheads. Depending on where the boat is located, you might also have the opportunity for some trout or reds too, maybe even a flounder. It's just difficult to say without seeing the location and what's available. One thing about saltwater fishing, any natural bait in the water is going to get bit, and bit fast by something.

Thanks Scott. His boat stays in a covered slip at the Blue Dolphin Marina in Seabrook. I supposed we could fish at the slip, thats no fun though. Its sort of a destination thing, too. Just looking for somewhere to go so we can actually be out on the water, and can sit, relax, and watch the sun come up (and go down in the pm) and maybe catch a few fish all at the same time.

I will definitely try your bait suggestions. If by chance we were to target some reds or specs, where would be some general places to check out?

Can't help you with specific locations for that area, I normally go to the Rockport/Port A area myself, and there's lots of good info on this forum for that area. I was just trying to help out if you were just looking to catch something in general. Good luck, sounds like a fun deal.
