Has anyone fished with 200lb Spiderwire braid fishing line ? How well dose it perform ? What reel would be best suited for it ? I would think a reel that can provide 50 lb. of drag pressure would be needed to make use of it. BP sells it in 300yd spools . 50 LB. or more drag pressure and 300 yds of 200lb line should be able to handle some big fish .

My biggest rig is 500 yards of 100# spectra on a Penn 6/0 ...does great on anything I will probably ever catch. Your 200# will have dia. of 50# mono (as you know) and I think either a 6/0 or 9/0 would be fine. If you are head boat fishing 300 yards is probably plenty...if you want a 1000 pound fish from your private boat you had better have 1500 yards. My 500 yds. of 100# will fill the 6/0 perfectly...and it performs perfectly. I'm still not sure of other applications for braid (still testing), but offshore it is the ONLY way to go...deck hands hate it because it is so hard to untangle from mono, but oh well...if it isn't too much I just tell them to cut it off....need to get back to fishing and I hate to make the whole boat mad..just one of the trade offs when you take your own stuff. Note: I have Spiderwire on my Garcia 6500 live bait rig (close inshore) and it does fine...for me the braid is an adjustment in casting (very different), but for trolling, drifting, etc. it is WONDERFUL.

that reel . Have you seen the video of
the shark angler strapped into standup
gear and the shark pulls him overboard?

MO ; Thanks for the reply . I value the advice of the experianced . Have a 12hr charter out of Sabine pass with 5 other fishermen on a 28ft. boat . Targeted fish is red snapper . 1ST time to use this charter and the 1st time to go offshore in many years.

I prefer to fish for king mackrel but thats hard to do when others are trying to catch their limit of snapper . The charter supplies the tackle and bait. I hoped to bring one of the spiraled wraped fishing rods I built to test with the 6500 reel spooled with 65# braid . Installed a power handle and aftermarket super-smoothy drag on the 6500 . May hook up with a big Amber jack and bust up the whole rod and reel combo . If this set up will not work I'll try the Garcia 7000 spooled with 80# braid next time .

What I'm trying to achieve , is to develope an all-round lite weight rod and reel combo that will out muscle medium saltwater gamefish . Holding 4/0 - 6/0 reels all day wears me out . Big game like marlin and bluefin are out of the question right now . My pockets don't run that deep.

Rod and Reel technology has not kept up with fishing line technology . May have to go back with the old heavy 4/0 Penn .

Have you looked at the Pro Gear reels? They have some small, light weight (22 -26 oz) models that deliver 30#+ of drag. http://progearfishingreels.com/albacoreseries.htm

Btw, it will probably take a tweaked 50-class or larger lever drag to produce 50# of consistent drag.

I have 5 Rig's that we fish with on my boat, all are Ambu 7000 spooled with 120 lb Spider Wire ( I like the Blue Color the best ), attached to American Rodsmith 7' Snapper Rod. I love the setup, and it will eat up AmberJacks all day long, it is my body that has the problem. There is no streatch in the line, so you really need a good set up to fish this line.

The only use I have for 200lb Power Pro is on my Reef Donkey rig, aka Amberjack. 200lb Power Pro on a Penn International 30W matched with a heavy action custom stick and 70lbs of drag at full. There are very few instances when line that heavy is necessary and many times line that heavy can be very dangerous to anglers with little experience. For example if your drag sticks on a big fish going south you better have a knife ready because something is going in the water. The rule on my boat when AJ jerking is the rod stays in the rod holder until we pull the fish away from the structure then the reel is backed off to about 20lbs of drag and the fish is fought standup and the rod is never strapped to an angler and a knife is always handy. Make sure you know what you are getting into and make sure your rod and reel can handle the load otherwise you have wasted line strength. Think about this, with 100lb power pro you can easily get 40lbs of drag on the fish and very few grown men can hold 40lbs of drag for very long but if something goes wrong most grown men can hang on long enough at 100lbs for something to be done in an emergency.
